Samrat Prithviraj, failed to make any waves at the box office. Starring Akshay Kumar, the film had a double-digit opening at Rs. 10.70 crores. However, it was not enough for a film that is said to cost around Rs. 200 crores. The increase on Saturday and Sunday was also minimal as word of mouth was not consistently positive. On weekdays, the film slowed down significantly. In 10 days the film has collected around Rs. 60 crores and is expected to finish its run under Rs. 70 crores.
Will Samrat Prithviraj’s debacle affect Akshay Kumar and Yash Raj Films’ box office status? Trade experts share their views
Akshay Kumar’s reputation affected?
Akshay Kumar and YRF (Yash Raj Films) have recently worked together Tashan (2008). The Vijay Krishna Acharya direction was badly panned by audiences. Same thing happened to me Samrat Prithviraj. Is that why they both shy away from working together in the future?
Trade expert Komal Nahta disagreed: “I don’t think any production house thinks of these conditions. He is a commercial actor. If they have a joint project, they will definitely work together again. Nobody works like that. YRF applies corporate principles and companies do not think in terms of good luck, bad luck or similar superstitions.”
However, he agreed that Akshay Kumar’s reputation would be tarnished: “Yes. This is his fourth flop since then Laxmii (2020), bell bottom (2021) and Bachchan Paandey (2022). Only Sooryavanshi worked for him. I don’t count Atrangi Re since it wasn’t quite his film.”

Vishek Chauhan, owner of Cinema Roopbani in Bihar, made it clear that Akshay Kumar is still a superstar: “There is nothing wrong with Akshay Kumar. He’s still a real star. Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar are the two real Bollywood stars who can attract audiences on each screen and that is the litmus test for any star. if Samrat Prithviraj is able to do a deal from Rs. 60 crore, all thanks to the presence of Akshay.”
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said: “One flop and people usually write off the actor or in this case the production house as well. But I can’t give you so many examples. Amitabh Bachchan had as many flops in a row as toofan (1989), jaadugar (1989), etc. He was completely written off. However, he rebounded with me Aaj Ka Arjun (1990) under the direction of a new director, KC Bokadia. Aamir Khan was written off after returning with a four-year hiatus Mangal Pandey (2005). Salman Khan, before Searched (2009), gave a series of flops. The same goes for Shah Rukh Khan. However, once they score a hit, they’re back. This is because they have a loyal following of fans. Therefore, writing off Akshay Kumar is foolish. He has the potential. And you can’t tell that he’s one of the most committed artists today. I see the dedication that is in Amitabh Bachchan in Akshay Kumar. He is very punctual and keeps his promises.”
He also recalled that Akshay Kumar had experienced such periods in the past. “Akshay had so many flops after his debut suction hand (1991), which was also just a decent grosser. And then with Khaladi (1992) and other films he jumped into the big league.”
Vishek Chauhan had a proposition for Khiladi Kumar: “Akshay Kumar has to go back 10 years. He must bring back the heroism. Akshay Kumar, the actor, needs to take a back seat. Akshay Kumar, the star, needs to come forward. I would love to see Akshay Kumar in one Khaladi Series. He’s making a movie called Bade Miyan Chote Miyan with Tiger Shroff. If the title of this movie has anything to do with it KhaladiHis chances of getting a job increase as franchises work big time. As Main Khiladi Tu Anari 2 or Khaladi vs Khaladi or Khaladi versus New Khaladi or Khiladi versus Junior Khiladi etc. Remember how War (2019) was sold with the slogan “Hrithik vs Tiger”. It increased the hype significantly.”
YRF reputation affected?
for YRF, Samrat Prithviraj is the fourth flop in a row after that Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar (2021), Bunty Aur Babli 2 (2021) and Jayeshbhai Jordaar (2022). Are these back-to-back debacles affecting their position in the market?
Komal Nahta said, “It affects their reputation 100%. Your equity will be diluted.”
Komal felt that this was already evident prior to the release of Samrat Prithviraj, “Previously, the YRF distribution team was in a dominant position when it comes to getting shows for their films thanks to the strong content of their films and the overall success rate. But for Samrat Prithvirajthey had to agree to many conditions imposed by the exhibitors. The exhibitors made it clear that they cannot give their film all the shows and will split the shows Samrat Prithviraj and another movie. They also told YRF that they cannot promise to run their film for 2 weeks. YRF had to bow to these conditions.”
The next film from YRF is shamshera and Vishek Chauhan said that being a big entertainer can turn the tide for the production house. However, he warned: “If Ranbir Kapoor isn’t shown as a hero in shamshera and is shown as a simple man caught in extraordinary circumstances, then this film too will fail.”
However, Taran Adarsh contradicted: “I don’t think YRF will be affected by this. You have some very big films ahead of you Shamshera, Pathaan and tiger 3. I have great faith in Aditya Chopra and his abilities. Check out the honesty of the production house. They share authentic figures from Samrat Prithviraj with me. Same thing happened to Jayeshbhai Jordaar also. Any other producer would have shied away from it. So I have great respect for them. This quality of hers will always keep her above all others.”
Final Thoughts
Vishek Chauhan said Samrat Prithviraj’s debacle should be a wake-up call for the industry. He also appealed to Bollywood filmmakers that they should return to become full-fledged entertainers. His message to the filmmakers is: “Aa off loud chalen. Nahi Milega aapko Oscar. desi movies banaiye. Aisi filmin banaiye jo gaav my chalegi. oh yeah Movie gaav my chalegi, woh aaj ke date my Pouri Duniya my Chalegi. This is because the tastes of both have aligned theatrically. When a avenger going well in New York, also in my city Purnea and vice versa.”
