How did an anonymous gossip account’s unverified posts gain such a stranglehold over celebrity news?
Just a decade ago, the world of celebrity gossip was dominated by the invading paparazzi and public figures like Perez Hilton. Now the whole industry is excited about the Deuxmoi account.
Deuxmois rise was sudden. In early 2020, it was just an account from a fashion blog with a few thousand followers, where the owner posted photos of celebrities and spread established gossip.
Then came an anonymous message detailing Leonardo DiCaprio’s sex life. The woman took a screenshot and posted it. Then someone claiming to be Jonah Hill’s ex contacted her with gossip about him.
The ball rolled for Deuxmoi.
Two years later, the account has over 1.6 million followers and regularly publishes the daily posts for the best gossip.
The account does not claim the correctness of the contributions. It just posts them and lets the internet do what it wants. On the official site, the “About” page just says “Thank you for visiting the “About” page. That’s about all we say about ourselves.”
Most of the posts are either sightings or largely blank, honest observations about big names in pop culture. But occasionally the site is riotous.
When the Instagram page posted about the Amber Heard/Johnny Depp trial, there was a backlash on the subreddit dedicated to the account. Users felt Deuxmoi was wrong to side with Depp and questioned the impact of her report on public perceptions of the case.
The subreddit, which Deuxmoi says was never associated with her, rebelled.
In their staunch support of Heard as a rare place online to represent her side, users have banded together against the Instagram poster.
“This sub may have many different opinions, but the one thing that brings us all together is our strong dislike for Deuxmoi.” a user Posted.
Who is actually Deuxmoi?
There are a few theories as to who is behind the account. The woman behind it has tried to remain anonymous and never posts anything personal.
in one vanity fair In an interview, Deuxmoi admitted that she lived in New York, had a career in fashion and made nothing from the site until she started selling merchandise in January.
For a while, there were many theories that Hailey Bieber was behind the account — or at least the person behind it knew, after posts about an alleged pregnancy were followed by her finding out.
But she denied it in the Vanity Fair article.
journalist Brian Feldman recently made a move to identify the woman behind Deuxmoi.
Using information from fashion blog Deuxmoi, which was run by two women prior to the current iteration of the gossip source, he narrowed it down to two names: Meggie Kempner and Melissa Lovallo.
Little is known about the two, but Kempner is the granddaughter of the late famous New York socialite Nan Kempner, while Lovallo apparently works in the fashion industry. Neither was confirmed by the account.
