It’s been over a year and a half since the USA were crowned champions at the 2021 World Juniors, but here, on the unusual date in August, the country begins its bid to repeat itself as a gold medalist.
Tonight, the USA 2022 World Juniors competition begins when the reigning champions take on Germany at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

It’s a unique time of year to play the tournament, but that’s because the original tournament was canceled after three days of competition due to COVID-19. The IIHF has decided to restart the annual event in August, and now, instead of taking a break from their regular season, these teenagers are tasked with playing some of their first ice hockey competitions in months.
“I think the challenge is getting the guys to play good, detailed playoff hockey,” US head coach Nate Leaman said before the game. “Usually for this tournament the guys are in the middle of their season so they are already prepared, they are in form. Your game contains much more detail. We have to get there. We have to get there quickly.”
The USA enters the game at World Juniors with 11 wins and one OT loss to Germany. The Americans are aiming for the seventh win in a row against the Germans.

Matt Knie’s tracker
In each game, we’ll highlight a Team USA player to follow during the matchup.
First up is Matt Knies, a forward from the University of Minnesota. He is a 2021 second-round draft pick from the Maple Leafs, who ran for the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics, recording one goal and one assist in four games with the club.
He’s an experienced winger with a big body (6-3, 205) who constantly uses his frame to create space and distance from his opponents. The Golden Gopher would be one of the top forwards for Team USA in Edmonton.
1st period
A very quiet phase by Knies at the start. While USA was in control the whole time, he didn’t get the puck often and the only chance he had offensively was to get out of the rush when he got a pass that came over his wing and ripped it wide . I would expect him to become more involved in the game as the game progresses.

2nd period
11:06 p.m — GATE! After less than two minutes, the lead of the USA doubles. This time it’s Red Savage who knocks the puck off the rebound through Quapp. Riley Duran had rushed in from the rush, passed the puck off the boards to himself and got the shot into the net, and Savage was able to get the rebound while he was on the ice.
11:06 p.m — GATE! Seconds after Germany killed the Major, USA scored their third goal of the evening thanks to Landon Slaggert. The US stuck around after getting Quapp to crawl around and get out of his crease but couldn’t put it to him. Finally, Slaggert slides the puck off the goal line through Quapp’s legs to score the goal.
End of 1st period: USA 2, Germany 0
10:47 p.m — At the end of the 1st it is 2-0 USA. A great first period for the Americans who controlled the game throughout and without a strong play from Quapp it could definitely be worse. Germany is trying to slow down the US with its physicality, but the US is playing it through. They will still have some time on Rossmy Major to start the second period as well.
10:42 p.m — GATE! After the first powerplay session had some excellent chances, the second session comes out of rush and Logan Cooley ends the game. Matthew Coronato hit him with a pass that cut towards night and while Cooley’s first try was stopped by Quapp, his second would not be denied. The USA remain 2-0 ahead on the power play.

10:36 p.m – Another penalty for Germany as Bennet Rossmy hits Dominic James high Rossmy’s elbow goes up, but James positions himself lower and doesn’t seem intent on touching the head. However, after officials’ review, they have determined that it will be a five-minute major for Rossmy and a game misconduct.
10:29 p.m — GATE! The USA finally get one past Quapp with their 15th shot of the period when Luke Hughes rips a shot from the point and the German goalkeeper doesn’t see it. Some excellent screens up front as Quapp looked left and it hit him right. 6:21 is still left, the USA lead 1:0, Germany has not yet recorded a shot on goal.

10:23 p.m – Mackie Samoskevich buzzed around as the United States put pressure on the offensive zone for a good 90 seconds. The game ends with a fold injury, but the Americans do anything but score early. Germany are yet to register a shot on goal as the United States’ switching game smothered every onslaught they had.
10:19 p.m — The first half of the period was entirely in the United States. They’re faster, generate turnover, and win almost every 1v1 match. They just don’t have anything to show yet because Quapp was so strong for Germany.
10:12 p.m – The US is heading for the power play as Germany’s Maciej Rutkowski gets a two-minute sentence for a hook. Early chance for the Americans to take the lead.
10:11 p.m — First postponement of the game and Landon Slaggert has a big chance. A skillful toe drag from Thomas Bordeleau pulls the defender and leaves Slaggert open up front, but he misses the net.
10:10 p.m — Puck is down and we have action!
foreplay
21:15 — Here are the lineups for USA’s opening game against Germany. It’s Kaiden Mbereko in the net for the United States taking on Germany’s Nikita Quapp. Especially no Luca Münzenberger, an Oilers contender and Germany’s top defenseman. The reason is unclear, but this is a massive blow to their blue line.
