Call of Duty: Warzone could lose one of its most successful competitive players if the sequel doesn’t live up to expectations.
Call of Duty: Warzone may be in slightly choppy waters at the moment. The battle royale was something of a phenomenon when it first landed, but its popularity — including its competitive popularity — is waning somewhat. Aydan, like many other esports professionals, anticipates this release with more apprehension than excitement. It’s telling that one of the game’s most well-known players has now said that if the game doesn’t live up to his expectations, he’ll simply head for new shores.
Despite dissatisfaction in some quarters, war zone is still an immensely popular game and in general call of Duty has shown impressive staying power as a franchise over the years. The game’s esports popularity is just one aspect of its success, but not a small one, especially considering how competitive the battle royale gaming space is. It will be interesting to see what kind of competitive dynamics war zone 2 after its release and whether it can entice players like Aydan to stay here.
