INDEPENDENCE DAY EVENTS
Preparations for the July 4 blasts in at least half a dozen communities across St. Tammany continue, but details are subject to change and weather may force delays. So look for updates, changes and final details on the Facebook pages maintained by each event or their community sponsor.
MANDEVILLE: Light Up the Lake celebration on July 3 with live entertainment – Groovy 7 and The Brasshearts – between Coffee Street and Carroll Street from 5pm Food trucks, a children’s tent, games, picnics and a patriotic tribute. Fireworks from Sunset Point begin at 8:30 p.m. to light up Lake Pontchartrain. Picnics allowed along the lake shore from 10:00 a.m., but no glass bottles or charcoal grills allowed. COVINGTON: Sparks in the Park from 5:30pm to 9:30pm on July 2nd at Bogue Falaya Park. The Covington Concert Band provides patriotic tunes synchronized with a fireworks display at dusk. Before that, the Northshore Traditional Music Society will play bluegrass and rockabilly. Children’s activities, food trucks, vendors and drinks for adults. Covington Kiwanians will sell hot dogs and hamburgers and sponsor a hot dog eating contest; Rotarians will sell soda and water and have a potato sack race.
SLIDELL: The Slidell Heritage Festival at Heritage Park takes place on July 2nd with live music, food and fireworks. Gates open at 4pm; Fireworks at 9 p.m. Admission $10 for children 13 and older, free for younger ones. Performers include Soul Revival at 4:30 p.m.; Amanda Shaw, 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.; and The Phunky Monkeys, 9:30pm to 11pm Food truck on site and drinks available for purchase; Crafts and a children’s area. The event is a fundraiser for local charities. Hosted by Rotary clubs of Slidell and the city.
MADISONVILLE: The city is still finalizing the details of its July 4th Old Fashioned Fourth of July party in front of City Hall; begins at 10 a.m. and ends with fireworks. Early plans include children’s games, cornhole and horseshoe tournaments, a veterans’ salute, watermelon-eating and rooster crowing competitions, music, food, cake-making and fireworks on the riverbank.
ABITA FEATHERS: The city will celebrate July 4th at the trailhead and park with live music, games, concessions and a flag retirement ceremony. Everyone is encouraged to wear patriotic costumes. PEARL FLOW: The municipality’s Independence Day celebrations take place on July 1 at City Hall. At 6 p.m. there will be an opening ceremony with fireworks at dusk. Enjoy three leg races, a hula hoop contest, barrel races, a cake eating contest, sack races and more. Bring your chairs and blankets.

GO MATILDA: Meet the little girl with amazing wit and psychokinetic powers in the show based on Ronald Dahl’s classic book Matilda. She is not loved by her cruel parents but is loved by her teacher Miss Honey who is trying to protect Matilda from the terrible headmistress. directed by Christopher Manguno; Music conducted by Frank Gonzalez. CHRISTWOOD: Christwood’s Atrium Gallery is hosting an exhibition of 53 multimedia works by 25 local artists through July 30th. ROLL THEM: Slidell Movie Nights continue this summer on select Saturday nights at Heritage Park with free admission. The next, The Empire Strikes Back, will air on June 25 at 8:30 p.m. Bring ice chests and bug spray. Discounts will also be available for nominal fees. Check Slidell’s Facebook page for weather-related schedule changes.
WOMEN: The next meeting of the Widows’ Social Club of Slidell will be on June 25 at 10 am at Aldersgate United Method Church, Genesis Hall, 360 Robert Blvd. Guest speaker is Kendra Maness, editor/publisher of Slidell Magazine and founder and coordinator of the “Rosies” of E. St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity. All widows are welcome to the meetings and to participate in the activities that members enjoy throughout the month. Larry!: Join Larry Hartzog’s Twisted Brew Festival and Homebrew Contest on June 25th from 4pm to 7pm at the Castine Center in Pelican Park near Mandeville to help homeless animals. More than 200 commercial and home-brewed beers are available for tasting. There will also be music, food for sale and vendors. Advance tickets start at $45 at Eventbrite. Participants can bring their dogs if they are friendly and there will be dogs on site looking for forever families. All proceeds go to the Northshore Humane Society.
FUN DAY: American Legion Family Fun Day, free and open to the public, will be held on June 25 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 185 American Legion Post, 1680 St. Anne St. in Slidell. Enjoy a water slide, bouncy house for little ones, pony rides, petting zoo, face painting, fire station to learn about safety, balloon animals, games and more. Hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary with support from the American Legion, the Sons of the American Legion, the Krewe of Selene, and the Slidell Police and Fire Department.
BREAKFAST: The Slidell Noon Lions Club has resumed its pancake breakfast on the “last Saturday of the month” from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Enjoy pancakes, sausage and drinks for $6 at Lions Den, located at the corner of Cleveland Avenue and Carey Street. Proceeds benefit Leader Dogs for the Blind, Louisiana Lions Summer Camp for disabled children, and local organizations. Bingo follows at 11:30am

PEL PARK CAMP: Pelican Park’s summer naturalist camp for two age groups – 6-8 years and 9-12 years – includes weekly field trips and hands-on learning. Get kids off screens and back into nature with different themes for each camp week, from water and fish to bugs and insects. PA CAMPS: Action Youth and Community Resources is accepting applications for summer 2022 PA camps for students in grades 5 through 12. These nightly youth development camps are designed to teach leadership and communication skills, and the goal is for students to return to their schools and communities and implement programs that will positively impact their lives and the life of the community at large. Camps are held at Fontainebleau Elevated Group Lodging at Fontainebleau State Park. Positive Action Camps for grades 9 through 12 began June 21 and will last through June 25; Positive Attitude for grades seven and eight will have two sessions, one June 27-30 and another July 18-21; and PA Junior for students entering fifth and sixth grades will be held July 22-24. PARK FESTIVAL: On July 16, Pelican Park marks Parks and Recreation Month by celebrating the recreation of the St. Tammany community in an event at the park from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. more. For the children there are bouncy castles, games and activities. For the adults there are the sounds of Rockin’ Dopsie and Lost in the 60s. At The Groves in the Park, 63350 Pelican Drive, Mandeville. JUM: Tickets for A Taste of Covington, the city’s annual food, wine, music and arts experience, are available now at www.bigtickets.com. The event features adult-only winemaker dinners, brunches, and other gourmet experiences for a month Tuesday through Saturday in June. Reservation needed. GALA: St. Anselm’s Catholic Church of Madisonville hosts its 14th Annual Gala at the Castine Center on July 30th. The patronage party hosted by Gallagher’s starts at 6pm and doors open at 7pm. The live band will be Three Thirty Seven, and more than 50 restaurants will offer a dinner buffet. There will be one silent and one live auction and the evening will conclude with a Rainbow Northshore Buick GMC raffle for a 2022 GMC Acadia.
