Developer Splash Damage is collaborating with two of the biggest names in FPS streaming to create a new open-world survival game currently known as Project Astrid. Michael ‘Shroud’ Grzesiek and Chris ‘Sacriel’ Ball are best known for excelling in games like CSGO, Valorant, Battlefield, DayZ, CoD Warzone and PUBG Battlegrounds. Now they are dedicated to game development in collaboration with the developer of classic multiplayer FPS Enemy Territory Quake Wars and spinoff Gears Tactics.
“I want to build the best game ever – that’s my goal,” says former Counter-Strike pro Shroud in the Project Astrid announcement video. Sacriel, one of the most popular UK Twitch streamers of all time, adds: “One of my dreams for the last few years has been to go on Twitch and see people play a game that I was involved in.”
The pair are joined by Splash Damage creative director Lance Winter to announce their new project, which Shroud says was initiated by a message from Sacriel asking if he’d be interested in making a game together. “I hit him straight away with three words, ‘Yes, I’m down.'” The pair then joined forces with Splash Damage, which Winter says was already beginning development on a new survival-oriented open-world game.
It sounds like the pair’s primary mission will be to refine that perfect feel that defines the best shooters. “I can remember my first kill in my first survival game,” Sacriel recalls with an enthusiastic look, “because these games tell more of a story than any other genre.” As two of the most recognizable names in FPS games, they certainly have a lot of understanding of what makes a shooter click.
“What makes Survival incredibly compelling to me is this ever-present sense of tension and drama,” Winter explains, saying that the team is excited to “make something really new in the survival space.” Splash Damage, currently working on Transformers Reactivate, has a 20-year history stretching from the popular Wolfenstein spinoff Enemy Territory and its sequel Quake Wars to working on Gears of War 4, Gears 5, and Halo The Master Chief Collection, combined with the creation of the strategy game spinoff Gears Tactics.
Project Astrid is currently in pre-production, with more details to come in the near future. In the meantime, both Sacriel and Shroud will be covering the news on their respective Twitch channels following the announcement.
