In the end, Rita yelled “stop it” at the mad fans as she held up her hands before Tom brought the situation under control.
The enraged Hollywood star addressed the crowd and yelled: “My wife? Support the shit! Knocking my wife down?!”
The famous couple then walked to a nearby car, which drove them away.
Body language expert Judi James gave The Mirror her analysis of the altercation and said Tom then stepped in to “dominate and control the situation”.

She said, “If ever a star’s body language typically defined the word ‘affable’ both off screen and it would be Tom Hanks’. Tom is always one of the more agreeable and approachable down-to-earth looking A-listers but it’s apparent from this video that even he has his natural limit when it comes to protecting his wife Rita.
“The signs of kindness are in play as both Rita and Tom walk from their venue to their car.

“Rita goes out first and beams at the fans and photographers, and while she leaves quickly, there are no ‘avoidance’ rituals from her or Tom to suggest they are anything but happy to acknowledge these fans and paparazzi.
“Tom almost seems to be making some polite little bowing gestures and hand claps of respect and thanks as he walks behind her. A fan appears to get in his way with a backpack, and Tom appears to bump into him as he has to walk around the man staying where he is.
“Rita appears to have stopped right in front of her, and as a man runs up to her next to Tom, she screams and throws up her hands in a ‘stop’ or ‘enough!’ Her scream must of course alarm Tom.
“Hollywood stars have bodyguards for a reason and along with any group of devoted fans there is always the concern of an accidental attack meaning many stars are hair loss related to their reactions.
“Tom turns, raises both hands and flattens his palms to command and control the situation himself, rather than turning to his bodyguards or hiding behind security guards. lets the anger be heard in his voice.
“His mouth falls open and the corners of his mouth turn down in what looks like anger and disbelief. His hard stare lets the guys know what he thinks of them and he holds that stare before being escorted to his car.
Judi finishes her comment, saying, “Even his striding, tough-guy-looking gait now has the hint of a splay, suggesting arousal of anger.”
