It’s all pride and no prejudice.

It is a generally accepted truth that a single novel that has a good plot and a cast of characters must be the subject of repeated film adaptations. That’s why filmmakers keep coming back to Jane Austen pride and prejudice for inspiration (and financial success) and this time it’s very different from its predecessors.
Hulu fire island is the latest film to retell the evergreen tale of class and temperament differences, but with a massive twist: all of the main characters are part of the LGBTQ community.

The film – named after a real New York vacation spot – was hailed by critics and viewers alike for its irreverent comedy, romance, racial diversity and gay pride.

It also emphasizes seeing people as individuals rather than members of a herd: two people of the same racial background, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic class can be as different as chalk and cheese.
Let’s see what the internet has to say about it fire island:
1.
Joel Kim Booster and Bowen Yang are praised for their roles.
Unless FIRE ISLAND gets EVERYONE Joel Kim Booster and Bowen Yang a million more rolls of film, I need the FBI to investigate what went wrong

The whole cast is excellent indeed.
Bowen Yang gives ACTOR. Matt Rogers is a scene thief. Conrad Ricamora LEADING MAN. Joel Kim Booster STAR. Top to bottom (no pun intended) wonderful. #fire island

3.
The film is an ode to the wealth LGBT people bring to our society.
There’s something absolutely magical, spiritual and special about the bonds that queer people form in our friendships, and Fire Island is the first film I’ve seen that has honestly captured that magic.

It’s an excellent transition from APAHM to Pride Month.
Bowen Yang and Joel Kim Booster and MARGARET CHO in Fire Island on Hulu 🙀💙💜💖 this is how we celebrate the #APAHM #PrideMonth handover from now on

People found the film extremely relatable.
It’s insanely impressive how @ihatejoelkim perfectly captured the experience of going to Fire Island as someone who isn’t a Gwm with a six pack abs and Bowen Yang’s character is perhaps the closest I’ve come to seeing a character in a gay movie. Easily in the top ten best gay movies.

6.
A healthy summary of the film.
Finally seen FIRE ISLAND and am amazed that not only is it an excellent update on traditional rom-coms and a well-made feature film, but it also covers so much ground so skillfully by speaking honestly and unbiasedly about gay culture in all its quirks, to get better or worse.

The film is peppered with funny dialogues.
Tomás Matos saying “I’ll see you tomorrow girl” to the sun after sunset in “Fire Island” is really one of the funniest lines ever for me

The comparisons had to be made and the film pays tribute to 2005 Pride and Prejudice.

Bowen Yang has won many new fans…
I didn’t care for Bowen Yang and I saw Fire Island and if I tell you I’ll see everything and everyone he does from now on….

12.
The film was a parade of bathing suits.
I just finished Fire Island and unlocked a new recurring nightmare of having to shoot a feature film entirely in a bathing suit. All these men deserve medals of honor

13.
People loved the Britney Spears scene.
bowen yang, matt rogers and tomas matos sometimes sing about britney spears while bowen’s amorous interest looks on with his snobbish bestie and ex/current bf = instant classic #fireisland

Ricamora does a good job playing Mr. Darcy. Can someone put Mr Darcy’s first name in the comments (without googling of course)?
Conrad Ricamora is an absolutely perfect Darcy and I wish he would do many more romantic leads, thank you. #FireIsland #FireIslandMovie

fifteen.
An improvement over the original story that Luke (Lydia) doesn’t end with the Wickham of the story.
Luke’s storyline reminds me of the Lizzie Bennett Diaries and how they understood Lydia was a victim. I’m glad Fire Island went down this path and didn’t demonize Luke #FireIsland

The film aims to evoke the fun and joy associated with summer vacations.
Let’s talk about Fire Island anyway! I’m rewatching it because the setting is total summer escapism and I’m interested in some of the changes

People see the film more than once.
I’ve seen FIRE ISLAND (2022) twice since it came out last week. It’s hilarious, cute, raunchy, great to watch and just a really smart adaptation of Pride & Prejudice with a perfect Mr. Darcy in Conrad Ricamora and a surprising Jane/Charlotte mix in demure MVP Bowen Yang.

Straight or queer, everyone would love to live the life of Margaret Cho’s character.
Margaret Cho’s character in Fire Island lives my dream: I live alone in a beautiful place where I occasionally host large groups of fun people who love me and enjoy going out but never get me to go out with them

It’s the little pieces behind the scenes that can sometimes make a movie.
Finding out that it was Bowen Yang’s voice singing “she’s an icon, she’s a legend” at the beginning of “Fire Island” really changed things for me over the past few days.

The film caught the attention of someone who tweeted that he failed the Bechdel test…
Okay, I just added an implication to the Bechdel test: Two men talking about the female protagonist of an Alice Munro story in a screenplay based on a Jane Austen novel = passed. #FireIsland #BechdelTest

But then there are many who realize that not every film needs to tick all the boxes of representation.
about this tweet: I loved Fire Island. I’m a black lesbian and didn’t necessarily see myself in the film directly, but that’s more than okay. It’s Pride Month, I celebrate narratives that don’t center me. You should all try to do the same.

All in all, the film makes an important contribution to promoting diversity, but it can’t be expected to shoulder all the weight.
I hope this discourse on Fire Island is a reminder that no single film can possibly bear the burden of representation for diverse communities that have been marginalized for as long as film is a medium. That’s why Hollywood needs to greenlight more movies like this.

Please try to understand that not every single story can be about YOU.
I can’t help but think of the white folks who are angry that Turning Red and Fire Island aren’t centering their experience, and they’re *as close* to understanding how it is for the rest of us, except that them lacking the necessary empathy to close this gap requires.

Hahaha, I’m glad the film also gets people to explore new places.
I literally thought Fire Island was a made up location for the movie until my sister told me otherwise 2 days ago 😅😂😭

Overall, people were blown away.
Fire Island was so awesome wow ugh!!! Viscerally captured the desire to feel desired and wanted!! Joel Kim Booster deserves the world for writing this and Bowen Yang made me cry!! Beautiful catharsis

And people are already demanding a sequel.
People are asking for a FIRE ISLAND sequel with Bowen Yang’s character, but it’s based on Sense and Sensibility and it’s called PROVINCETOWN.
