The story is that of Helm Hammerhand, set almost 200 years before the events of Lord of the Rings.
The film is scheduled to hit theaters on April 12, 2024. Here is the latest synopsis.
The anime film, directed by Kenji Kamiyama, is set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original film trilogy. A sudden onslaught from Wulf, a cunning and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking revenge for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to a daring last stand in the old Hornburg stronghold – a mighty stronghold that would later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Hera, Helm’s daughter, finds herself in an increasingly desperate situation and must find the will to lead the resistance against a deadly foe bent on her utter annihilation.
The occupation
Brian Cox plays Hammerhand and Gaia Wise his daughter Hera. Luke Pasqualino (snowpiercer) will represent Wulf. Additionally, the film will see the return of Miranda Otto as Eowyn. Although this story takes place long before Eowyn was born, Otto will serve as the film’s narrator. This will tie the film even closer Lord of the Rings movies. Unlike Amazon The Rings of Power, The War of the Rohirrim will have the same designs as the movies.
The vocal ensemble also includes Lorraine Ashbourne (Netflix’s Bridgerton), Yazdan Qafouri (I Came By), Benjamin Wainwright (BBC One’s World on Fire), Laurence Ubong Williams (Gateway), Shaun Dooley (Netflix’s The Witcher), Michael Wildman (Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), Jude Akuwudike (Beasts of No Nation), Bilal Hasna (BBC’s Sparks) and Janine Duvitski (ITV’s Benidorm).

The film is being produced by Academy Award winner Philippa Boyens of the writing team behind The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, and produced by Joseph Chou (TV series Blade Runner: Black Lotus). The writing team of Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou penned the screenplay from a screenplay by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, based on the book The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King by JRR Tolkien. The team of creative staff returning from The Lord of the Rings trilogy also includes Academy Award winners Alan Lee and Richard Taylor, as well as Tolkien illustrator John Howe.
