Coventry Love Island star Niall Aslam has spoken candidly about what went through his mind after his stint on the ITV2 dating series in 2018. After his appearance on the show, the 26-year-old was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for two weeks.
Niall, who has an autism spectrum disorder, said at the time that he suffered from hallucinations and lost touch with reality. Taking to TikTok, the star has now opened up about what he’s actually been going through and claims he thought he’d gone to another ITV show, the Daily Star reports.
He said: “When I actually got into psychiatry from Love Island, I actually had no idea I was in a psychiatry. My brain was in full blown psychosis, so I had no idea what was going on.

Niall continued, “One of the more rational thoughts I had at the time was ‘I’m on another show, they put me on another show, I don’t know why’. That means I’m a star… Get me out of here! So I go to the desk and just start yelling, “I’m a star… Get me out of here!”.
“Turns out it wasn’t me, turns out I would have been totally mugged, but you know it was a bit of a sight.”
Niall also claimed that the show is “set up” with producers orchestrating the contestants’ connections. He said: “Before Love Island I was a regular social work student in Coventry and to be honest call me naive or whatever I always thought the show was all as it seems. As you may or may not know, I have an autism spectrum disorder that the show knew about because they get all your medical records.
“That might explain why I thought the show was all as it seems because I think quite literally, but when I got there there were a lot of different little things I didn’t see coming like I just thought you would talk whoever you want but it was very structured in a way like “don’t talk to her” or “no you like that person” and I’m quite an unpredictable person and I think they wanted to be able kind of knowing what you’re going to do next, the stress that comes with it, on top of a ton of other things, really started to bother me.

Niall previously revealed he suffered from Harry Potter delusions following his time on the ITV2 dating program, telling his followers: “I guess it didn’t help that I was looking at my arm in my psychosis and there was literally a magic wand on it.
“To top it off, when I was on Love Island there was a lot of Harry Potter talking to me and when I got out of the psychiatric hospital people would come up to me and say things like, ‘You’re a wizard, Niall! I was there like ‘I knew I was right!’
Niall continued, “Those Lush bath bombs, I popped them all in the bathtub because I thought that in Harry Potter, when Moaning Myrtle puts the egg in the bathtub to reveal all these mysteries… Turns out that the bathtub just turns brown.”
Discussing why he left Love Island, Niall told his Instagram followers: “What I found out later was that I had what’s called stress-induced psychosis… I didn’t know what that was. Basically, you become so overwhelmed that you lose touch with reality.
“You’re hallucinating, you don’t know what’s going on, you’re not fully aware of your surroundings, you’re not sure, you need other people to take care of you.”
