The following contains spoilers for The Boys Season 3 Episode 2, ‘The Only Man in the Sky’ now on Prime Video.
The first three episodes of The young Season 3 gave fans plenty to unpack, including a clue to the cast Riverdale. Homelander’s Birthday Spectacular was the focus of Season 3 Episode 2, The Only Man in Heaven and was packed with celebrity guests from Judi Dench to Starlight. The guest list featured none other than the cast of The CW’s Riverdale.
The cast of Riverdale weren’t the only special guests invited to Homelander’s much-anticipated Birthday Spectacular. The second episode of The young’ The Season 3 premiere kicked off when Homelander revealed his party’s crazy guest list. Guests included members of the Seven such as Starlight and Black Noir, as well as celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, newly introduced superhero Supersonic and country music’s Rascal Flatts. With such a stellar lineup, it’s no wonder the event was broadcast on five different Vought channels.
The young is known for subverting and lampooning modern comic book adaptations (in addition to lampooning Hollywood and society at large). Riverdale has been one of the top-rated comic series in the last five years, so it was only a matter of time before that happened Riverdale got a nod The young. Prior to Season 3, it was unclear if the show Riverdale existed in The young Universe. Many other comic series and movies like Spiderman and The Lightning do not exist in the world of The young to keep the superhero concept exclusive to Vought. Confirmation from Homelander that the show Riverdale exists (and for the cast to come to his birthday party) seems incredibly fitting for both series.
Riverdale is not a comic series The young would almost want to parody. Riverdale is stylistically quite absurd, which is quite difficult to satirize. The young choose not to parody Riverdale and instead mentioning the series at a celebrity event is both tongue-in-cheek and quite a heavy blow to the series. Recent seasons of Riverdale are criticized somewhat for feeling too drawn out like other teen dramas, but many Riverdale Fans love the show more than ever because of its addictive characters. Mentioned during Homelander Riverdale was a humorous nod, it could also be interpreted as a critique of the show to shed celebrity culture.
The young Referencing recently aborted Riverdale tentatively opens the door for them to reference other comic book movies and shows. Both the Prime Video series and Dynamite Entertainment’s comics usually try to stay away from other existing comic content, but the writers aren’t afraid to make exceptions if the joke is good enough. For example, The young #35 referenced the Incredible Hulk – the very first Marvel reference from the comic. While The young The TV show will likely still steer clear of Marvel and DC properties, shows like that Jupiter’s Legacy, raise dion, Umbrella Academy, I do not agree, heroes and the tick can still be on the table.
Riverdale‘s reference in The young was short, sweet and incredibly clever. It would have been nice to have seen it Riverdale Actors like Lili Reinhart, KJ Apa, and Cole Sprouse react to the events of Homelander’s Birthday Spectacular, but their cameos could have ended up being too distracting. With five episodes remaining in this season of The youngone can only wonder which TV show this superhero satire will hit next.
The Boys Season 3 debuts new episodes every Friday on Prime Video.
