If anyone knows what it feels like to have too much of a good thing, it’s someone with an oval face shape trying to figure out what haircut will accentuate their features. They’re blessed with an even face shape, so they can pull off virtually any haircut imaginable (round and square faces are jealous everywhere.) But how do you decide which haircut to get when the options are endless? ? Surely there are haircuts that are better than others, right? Well, after a couple of celebrity hairstylists assured me that these gals can’t go wrong with any style, they let me know what the best of the best options are for flattering oval features. Here are the top five haircuts for oval faces to consider:
1. Face-framing textured bob
All low-maintenance girls with curly hair take note: you’re about to meet your signature haircut. A face-framing bob is perfect for you because, according to Andrew Fitzsimons, a celebrity stylist for A-listers, not only does it “define oval faces and keep them from looking weighed down,” but it’s chic without too much effort. Its natural texture makes this cut easy to style day after day.
2nd layer cut
Stylists across the board discourage long, blunt haircuts, so opt for a layered cut to let your features shine. Whether you prefer your hair medium length or a little longer, a tousled texture works really well, as “the volume of the waves highlights your cheekbones and draws attention to the center of your face,” Fitzsimons explained. And if you really want people to ask, “Who is she?” part your hair down the middle for added symmetry.
Gina Rivera, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Phenix Salon Suites, said that any style bangs work well, but “side-swept curtain bangs are terrific.” Additionally, “full bangs help draw attention to the center of the face and make your cheekbones pop,” Fitzsimons said. If you’re nervous about cutting full bangs, he recommends ordering a pony piece from Amazon (where there are plenty of affordable options) so you can see if you like it.
4. Structured praise
“Anything beyond the collarbone can distract from the face,” Rivera says, making a textured lob a great option for accentuating the features of an oval face. Look to celebrities like Khloe Kardashian and Kerry Washington for some of the most playful textured lobs we’ve seen on the red carpet.
5. Gently rounded bob
If you are interested in haircuts for oval faces that are a bit more polished, a soft rounded bob is a free and trustworthy choice. Rivera recommends a rounded bob that’s softer because it does a beautiful job of flattering oval faces. Plus, it’s a classic cut that will stand the test of time.
