Sony has now exceeded the number of games it promised to make available as part of its PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium catalogues, after previously launching the service in other regions with far fewer titles than expected.
Fans had been watching the service’s slow rollout over the past month in various countries around the world – leading up to its final launch today in the UK and mainland Europe.
Sony had previously promised that “up to 400” PlayStation 4 and PS5 games would be available to both PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tier subscribers – although the initial launch in Asia fell significantly short. Eurogamer’s list of PS4 and PS5 games available today includes 429, although Sony caveats that not all of them will be available in all regions.
In addition, Sony had promised “up to 340” retro games from the PS1, PS2 and PSP era, as well as the PS3 via cloud streaming. Eurogamer’s list of retro games available today is 404, again with the same caveat as above.
It’s worth noting that this number is significantly lower in regions where PS3 game streaming is not available. Eurogamer’s list of available PS3 games totals 365 – that’s the bulk of Sony’s current Classic catalog offering.
In regions without cloud streaming, the premium tier of the service is called Deluxe and comes at a slightly lower price.
Confusingly, Sony doesn’t list all of the games available through PlayStation Plus on its own website, and some can (currently) only be found by searching through the service’s console storefront.
Conversely, some games listed on Sony’s website do not appear in the service’s console store. And for others, we could only find very specific searches — for example, “QBert” didn’t work for us, but “Bert” did.
Meanwhile, other games such as the PSP title Super Stardust Portable, released this morning, are now becoming visible, having previously only been able to be found via direct search. It’s a chaotic situation, although Sony seems to have enough games now to hit the volumes it previously promised.
If you’re catching up, Sony’s revamped PlayStation Plus service is live now, with pricing plans of £11/month or £84 a year for Extra and £13.50/month or £100 a year for Premium.
Alternatively, you can simply stick with the current offering of the service. This has been renamed PlayStation Plus Essential and costs £7/month or £50/year.
