A gunman who exchanged gunfire with someone outside a movie theater was not only injured in the shooting but was expected to face criminal charges, Brookfield Police said in a statement Saturday night. The disclosure of the shooting was the first new information police shared about the violence outside the crowded Brookfield Movie Tavern in Brookfield Square Mall in the shooting. Police believe the person knew the other person who fired shots. This person is not in custody. Police officials gave no motive for the violence. The shots erupted as the audience left the theater just after midnight early Saturday morning. “We moved here because it was a nicer area and we wanted to get out of the city life and it’s kind of shocking to hear that; it’s supposed to be a nicer area,” said Jonathan Garcia. In the statement, a Brookfield Police captain said the injured person is now in police custody. Investigators referred several criminal charges against the person to the Waukesha County District Attorney, including carrying a concealed weapon, bail jumping and recklessly endangering security. Police have not released the person’s name. The theater management did not publicly release any additional information, but said they were cooperating with the investigation. The theater reopened on Saturday. If you have any information about the shooting or can help police identify the other shooter, call the Brookfield Police Department at (262) 787-3702.
