Dennis Adeniran’s impressive long-range shot helped Sheffield Wednesday beat Championship Sunderland in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
After an uneventful first 15 minutes, the League One side took the lead thanks to Adeniran’s superb shot from 25 metres.
Adeniran then called for an assist when he intercepted a poor pass from Black Cats goalkeeper Alex Bass from behind and centered on substitute Sylla Sow to sweep from 12 yards.
The visitors, who made 11 substitutions, were little threatened as their 18-game unbeaten run ended.
Sunderland’s elimination meant 12 Championship sides were beaten by a lower division opponent in the first round of that year’s competition.
The second round of the EFL Cup will now only feature eight second division clubs, four down from the previous record low of 12.
Sheffield Wednesday made eight changes since Saturday’s 1-0 win at MK Dons and the win gave them a measure of revenge for their defeat by the Black Cats in last season’s League One play-offs.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore told BBC Radio Sheffield:
“Initiating the changes and seeing the guys who came in perform like that was really great for me to play against a good opponent.
“I thought our players got stronger as the game went on and I thought we started dominating the game inside and outside of possession which was good and it was very gratifying to finish the game.
“The players compete against each other every week and that’s what we want here.”
Sunderland manager Alex Neil told BBC Newcastle:
“I’m disappointed that to some extent we were the makers of our own demise. I don’t think we’ve been torn apart too many times, really only when we made the mistake to score the first goal.
“I thought we controlled the ball without threatening. I don’t think we threatened enough, but that’s my responsibility and my burden.
“We have Jack Diamond, a winger who plays at centre-forward, we have Harrison Saunders, a midfielder who plays at left-back.
“But I just felt like because of the physical exertion we’ve put in the last two league games we didn’t want any of the other guys that were introduced tonight to expose themselves because we have a lot of midweek games ahead of us and it’s going to be really tough for us.”
