Zombie fiction is back – and who better to lead the waddling, rotting charge than the venerable sci-fi horror franchise resident Evil? Across 26 years, 14 consoles and 7 films – some of which were better than others – resident EvilThe dark, action-packed campiness has earned him a loyal following and a permanent place in video game legend. Now Netflix is trying some live-action resident Evil Adaptation, and the result seems to reach some interesting places.
For the uninitiated, the first Mainline games take place in and around a fictional Midwestern town called Raccoon City, which is the scene of several nefarious biological experiments conducted by the sinister biomedical group Umbrella Corporation. Most notable among their innovations is the T-Virus, a mutagenic agent responsible for all the zombies and other monsters running around threatening the protagonists. Some of these protagonists are from STARS, a special unit of the Raccoon City Police Department; others are civilians drawn into the proceedings by forces beyond their control, which is a fitting theme for a survival horror game. Attentive viewers will want to keep an eye out for these themes and concepts resident Evil releases.
The trailer begins with Hell: a flyover through what was once a city and is now a wasteland teeming with the crazed undead and the embattled survivors desperately struggling to escape. In voiceover, we hear an adult Jade explain that “they said the world ended in 2036”, the actual end of the world happened much earlier. The scene then changes to a clean, bright city surrounded by greenery. A sign greets the lone car that approaches: “Welcome to New Raccoon City.”
A new voiceover takes over: As the younger Jade and her sister Billie explore their new home, a calm female voice extols the Umbrella Corporation, “a company beset by scandal” that is “now trying to reinvent itself.” Both the voice and the recording of the town have a spooky, Stepford-esque vibe: too clean, calm, and perfect to be entirely real. The impact is amplified when we catch a glimpse of the narrator: presumably some sort of representative of the Umbrella Corporation, she says with a mild smile: “The things we’re working on today – they’re going to change the world. ”
Billie holds what looks like a strange caterpillar up to the camera and watches it crawl over her hand. Then everything changes abruptly: the sidewalk cracks, red dirt explodes upwards, and we see Jade running from her life from a giant, monstrous worm. This is the beginning of the end of the world the grown Jade spoke of. “We have a problem,” says her father, Albert, as we see a lab rat break the glass in her cage; then we cut to him as he soberly explains, “The drug contains a T-virus. The T-Virus can spawn monsters,” he explains, and as he speaks we see some of those monsters: shambling undead humans, a vicious undead dog. Billie seems threatened by something, and in the next shot she appears dead or unconscious; We see young Jade screaming in fear. More unsettling images flash by: of Billie, other survivors, and various monsters, until we see the adult Jade again, covered in blood. She hisses an expletive, gets up, and heads to the junkyard with a chainsaw. The next few scenes show Jade and other people fighting back against the zombified hordes, punctuated by the series tagline: “Evil has evolved.”
