What is the upcoming Spriggan anime series about?

The anime series Spriggan is an adaptation of a manga by Hiroshi Takashige that was serialized in Japan from 1991 to 1996.

In Spriggan, an ancient civilization once ruled the earth with knowledge and technology far surpassing that of today’s modern world; making their relics extremely powerful but also very well hidden.

“While high-speed communications networks cover the globe and the spying eyes of satellites are able to uncover all mysteries, the armies of great nations clash as they seek to uncover and explore these artifacts that possess an unfathomable ‘power’.” – Netflix YouTube trailer.

However, an organization called ARCAM is trying to keep these relics secret from these military superpowers… their special forces are known as Strikers, or more commonly Spriggans.

“The legendary comic that took the 1990s by storm has been vividly reimagined in 2D animation and 3D CG! Reborn after over 30 years, experience an authentic adventure series full of intense action scenes and a love for ancient civilizations!” – Netflix YouTube trailer.

After the manga’s release in the 1990s, a feature-length film was produced by Studio 4°C and released by Toho Animation in 1998. The film reportedly grossed around 350 million yen at the Japanese box office (around US$2.5 million today). ) and a video game called Spriggan: Lunar Verse followed in 1999.

Where to read the original manga series in English

The original Spriggan manga was first published by Viz Media under the title “Striker” from 1998 to 1999, but the English release of the series was unfortunately canceled due to a lack of interest in the North American market – probably because the US is the antagonist of the series.

Thankfully, Seven Seas Entertainment has remastered the manga for an international English release to coincide with the premiere of the upcoming Netflix anime series.

As of June 17, only one volume of the Seven Seas Spriggan manga has been released in English, and that’s limited to digital copies only – physical versions are due out on August 16, 2022, and Volume 2 is due out in November later this year .

Fans can purchase digital copies of the one available manga volume from Amazon, Bookwalker, Google Play, Kobo, and Barnes & Noble.
