Pop star Dua Lipa is rumored to be in talks to enter the DC Extended Universe herself as Mistress of Magic, Zatanna Zatara.
A fan update account for the upcoming zatanna Film shared an alleged confirmation that Dua Lipa is in fact (presumably) in talks with Warner Bros. about the role in a July 16 tweet. Artist Mickaël Journou responded to the news the following day with a poster depicting the singer as the titular magician with the speculative title Zatanna: Blood Spells, with the slogan “Want to see a magic trick?” subtly rendered in Zatana’s iconic backwards language.
News about a DCEU adaptation of zatanna was confirmed in March 2021, and Academy Award-winning actor and filmmaker Emerald Fennell was announced as the film’s writer. That Promising young woman Filmmaker previously commented zatanna‘s heavy genre and comic book influences, saying, “We’ve been working on this for a while. I’ve spoken to Bad Robot [Productions]that are amazing. You want to get the first part right, which is the script, before you think about anything else.” She added, “I’m such a genre fan. I’m a fan of witchcraft, magic and comics and this is scary and intense.”
Zatanna first appeared in the 1964s hawkman #4 written by Gardner Fox and illustrated by Murphy Anderson. The daughter of magician Giovanni Zatara and the mystical Sindella, Zatanna’s career as a stage magician soon gave way to using her real magic as a heroine alongside the likes of Hal Jordan and Barry Allen. Over the years, Zatanna has become one of DC’s most prominent magicians, even finding an indelible place in the Justice League Dark.
Fennell has also discussed the explosive and terrifying possibilities that a zatanna film delivers, thanks to the character’s dark comic book roots. “There’s a lot of things about her that felt really, really interesting,” Fennell said. “And it’s going to be an opportunity to do something really, really dark. And that got me excited to do something big and scary. I love this stuff.”
Dua Lipa’s signature disco-pop sound became a global phenomenon following the release of her eponymous debut album in 2017, three years after the former model signed to Warner Bros. Records. Her second studio album, 2020 nostalgia of the future, debuted to critical and audience acclaim and earned six Grammy nominations, adding to the plethora of nominations and awards the singer had already amassed. The album’s success has propelled her career by helping her take home both the British Female Solo Artist and British Album of the Year Brit Awards in 2021.
zatanna currently has no scheduled release date.
