DENVER — San Diego third baseman Manny Machado sprained his left ankle when he took a fall and ran out a grounder, and the Colorado Rockies finished a three-game sweep to beat the Padres 8-3 on Sunday .
Machado was injured in the first inning in the middle of a stellar season and left the game. The Padres said the X-rays were negative.
Randal Grichuk hit a homer to cap a five-run fifth inning, and the Rockies defeated San Diego for a 10th straight game at Coors Field, their longest home winning streak against the Padres in team history.
Machado was injured after hitting a grounder that was slowly rolling towards pitcher Antonio Senzatela. Machado sprinted down the line and stretched his left leg toward first base when the throw came in, but his cleat seemed to slip over the top of the bag and he fell to the ground, his leg buckled under him.
Apparently in pain, Machado, who was half a step out of play, grimaced and wrapped his hands around his left lower leg as team coaches came onto the field to tend to him.
Machado later sat up but was unable to put weight on the injured ankle and was taken off the field to the clubhouse for further evaluation.
Machado went into Sunday’s game with 12 homers and 46 RBI batting .329.
Senzatela (3-3) had six strong innings, Elias Diaz also had a homer and CJ Cron had three hits for Colorado.
Luke Voit and Austin Nola scored for the Padres.
Voit led the second with a home run and the Rockies evened the score in their half of the second on Diaz’s RBI single.
Colorado broke it up with a major fifth.
Garrett Hampson tripled with an out and Yonathan Daza walked, setting up RBI singles from Brendan Rodgers and Cron and finishing Blake Snell (0-4). Steven Wilson was relieved and Grichuk hit a three-run drive that gave the Rockies a 6-1 lead.
Diaz, finishing with three RBI, homed away from the sixth and pulled a base-loaded walk in the seventh.
Nola had a two-run homer in eighth ahead of Robert Stephenson. TRAINING ROOM
