Right after the 94th Academy Awards in late March, Gold Derby editors and pundits Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng made her ridiculously early Oscar predictions for 2023. And now, a little over four months later, it’s time to re-evaluate them and make some changes ahead of the Fall Festivals.
Most of our first picks survived the overhaul, including Steven Spielberg“The Fabelmans” Damien Chazelle‘s “Babylon” and Sam Mendes“Empire of Light,” but some changes were necessary as some films aren’t coming out in 2022. Other optimizations are based on new data, like Netflix’s acquisition in April Alejandro G. Inarritu‘s “Bardo” and the Boffo success of “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. We made our predictions so early that the latter hadn’t even been released, but now we’re both predicting multiple bids for the Michelle Yeoh main actor, also for the main actress herself.

Top Gun: Maverick was the movie of the summer, just surpassing Titanic (1997) as the seventh-highest-grossing US box office, but JamesCameron could have the last laugh when Avatar: The Way of Water succeeds Top Gun: Maverick and joins the 2009 original as a Best Picture nominee. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is also on deck. Is there room for three blockbuster sequels?
Elsewhere we wonder whether Austin Butler can achieve anything as best actor for “Elvis” trying to guess what will win the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
