Match preview between Nebraska and Northwestern
Why Northwestern will win
So what has changed in the last few months?
The last time we saw Nebraska win a football game, it had no problem with Northwestern in a 56-7 blowout — the only Husker win since 9/11.
How are Northwestern better than last season when nothing seemed to work right in a disastrous 3-9 run?
Starting off, the offensive line centered around All-America tackle Peter Skoronski will be a big plus, there’s supposed to be more of a running game, and the defense got a little help from the line transfer portal.
On the other hand, there’s a big PROVE IT factor for Nebraska.
It also went 3-9. Head coach Scott Frost has not been replaced after another terrible year, the defense needs to prove they can take the ball away and QB Adrian Martinez is doing his thing at Kansas State.
If Northwestern can slow this down, keep the score low and make it whoever fails first, they’ll be in good shape against the team that has all the pressure on their side.

Why Nebraska will win
Nebraska just got more talented.
It’s still lacking playmakers across the board to make a lot of noise statewide, but QB Casey Thompson was a good hit from Texas and the receiving corps got a lot of help with LSU’s Trey Palmer, state’s Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda New Mexico, and Marcus Washington of Texas. The defenses filled in some spots and helped add depth.
The biggest change is style, bringing offensive coordinator Mark Whipple over from Pitt — he helped make Kenny Pickett a ton of money.
Brace yourself for a far more dangerous passing game, and it begins by hitting a Northwest secondary that doesn’t return anyone who made a choice in 2021.

What will happen
For real? You’re voting against a guy named Fitzgerald in Ireland?
Northwestern and Nebraska were slated to move to Dublin in 2020, but a global pandemic had something to do with that move. Now the two are starting the Big Ten season in Week 0, and it’s massive for both teams.
Northwestern needs to show that the problems of 2021 are a thing of the past and the style, toughness and line play can be enough to get them back to a high level.
Nebraska must show that any changes under Frost were enough to win.
Don’t expect anything nice.
The Northwest Lines will be strong from the off as Fitzgerald’s squad slows things down to a halt at times. Nebraska won’t have the game in progress to control the clock, and third down conversions won’t be there consistently.
However, Nebraska will hit two deep plays in the second half to finally pull back a little. Northwestern will have its chances late, but its fourth-quarter drives will falter if the Huskers come out with a stronger win than it will look.
