Minecraft YouTuber Clay “Dream” recently took part in an elaborate prank celebrating the spirit of April Fool’s Day. The joke involved the YouTuber being offered a role as Minecraft’s “CEO” among other responsibilities. While April Fools’ pranks like this one are not uncommon, Dream’s popularity and fanbase in the game’s community has garnered countless enthusiastic responses from players, content creators, and fans.
Every year, Mojang Studios finds new ways to introduce unique Easter Eggs and features to engage with the community on April 1st. With Dream’s YouTube and Twitch channels growing every day, it’s no surprise to be collaborating with him on a prank like this.
Fans are excited when Dream is offered the position of Minecraft CEO on April 1st
A tradition from the game’s earliest days, the occasion often involves unusual but fun content. For example, last year’s April Fool’s Day update wiped out players’ inventories and had them place one block at a time. This year Mojang added the moon dimension, the block of cheese, a new twist on the cow mob known as the moon cow, and a fire effect that appears randomly in the game’s launcher.
As for Dream, his side of the prank was featured via a YouTube short on his channel. Titled short YouTube sent me a Minecraft 30Mil Sub Playbutton, The speedrunner teases and then unpacks a package from YouTube. The pack turned out to have two sections, the bottom one possibly containing some sort of award.
As he opened the top level to viewers, a poster came into view that highlighted some of Dream’s best moments on YouTube, including his face reveal and the thumbnail of his most viewed video. However, the beauty of the ball was a small document with a big message.
The note thanked the YouTuber for his contribution to the game’s community and platform, and went on to explain that given Google’s “ongoing acquisition of Minecraft,” they would be offering him the position of Chief Executive Officer and Head of Foreign Relations for the game.
As he staggered in disbelief, the streamer opened the bottom of the package to reveal an award with a block of grass on it that read “The #1 Minecraft YouTuber.” By the time he finished the note, it was clear that the event was an elaborate prank, as no reports of Google acquiring Minecraft or acquiring Dream as “CEO” have surfaced.
However, the joke was extremely effective as hundreds of fans began congratulating the YouTuber on various social media platforms. An important fact to note here is that Dream decided to release its message just before April 1st, leading many to believe it was legit.
Fan Reactions to Dream’s “Appointment” as CEO of Minecraft
While many took the bait and some were confused, a sizable contingent sarcastically congratulated the YouTuber upon understanding the situation. Many even called out the prank, which overall resulted in the community having a fun time.
