SUMMER UPDATE
water polo for girls – Coach Claire Sonne announced her staff for 2022-23 who should continue to provide the Breakers with a very talented bench for the game day.
Molly Barnes – Head JV Coach, Asst. varsity coach
Barnes is a pioneer of the sport, both as a player and as a coach. She graduated from UCLA as a dual athlete (water polo and soccer). Barnes won two NCAA titles as a player while on UCLA’s water polo team. She became one of the first Division 1 water polo coaches at California State University, Northridge. Barnes was the head coach at CSUN for eight seasons. She was also an assistant coach at Loyola Marymount University for two seasons. Barnes earned her MBA while training at LMU. Barnes also coached at the high school and club levels in the Bay Area for six years. Most recently, she was the main assistant coach in California for three seasons.
Cambria Greer—Asst. JV Coach, Asst. varsity coach
Greer played water polo at SET WPC and then water polo at Cal where she completed her BA. She has worked for two years as Operations Manager and Assistant Coach at 6-8 Water Polo, founded by Maggie Steffens and Tony Azevedo. Greer works closely with Steffens and Azevedo on cutting edge coaching techniques, water polo tactics and statistical technology. She is an energetic, competitive and hard working young coach who makes an incredibly positive addition to the Laguna team.
Erich Fischer – Volunteer Assistant Uni-Trainer
Fischer is a 1992 Olympian and Stanford Water Polo alumni. He’s been an integral part of the Laguna Beach Water Polo community – through club and high school – for over 15 years and success has followed since he’s been involved. He has been on several coaching staffs and has won junior Olympic gold medals and CIF championships. He is a highly experienced coach who will return to the staff on an honorary basis this season.
AUTUMN SPORT RUNS
girls volleyball – Coach Sinan Tinek’s team tied for seventh place out of 45 schools that took part in last summer’s event. Breakers def. Indio 25-8, 25-9; Northwood 19-25, 25-14, 15-9; Yucaipa 25-15, 25-17 and on Sunday defeated Los Osos 25-21, 25-22, St Margaret’s 25-20, 25-22 before falling to Saugus 22-25, 14-25.
The JV team under Beau Bianchi finished 12th out of 25 teams and will open the 2022 season at the Newport Harbor JV Tournament on Saturday. Bianchi is a 1994 Laguna alumnus and played collegiately at USC.
The fresh team under Cliff Amsden went 2-4 for 18th place.
Breakers have nearly 50 players this season and open Dana Hills at Dugger Gym on Tuesday. Lower levels start at 4pm and uni should start around 5:15pm
Where are you now? A graduate of the 1993 Laguna class, Hava Davis is the assistant head coach for women’s volleyball at Hofstra.
girls tennis – Tryouts will take place on the Laguna courts August 17-19 under new coach Robert Klugman. The Breakers won the Sunset Wave League last season and have been in the playoffs for 33 straight years.
Soccer – John Shanahan is looking to defend his Golden West Pac 4 title this season and will play in Homedale, Idaho near Boise on August 19th. The trip marks Laguna’s second out-of-state encounter. The last time was a successful trip to Maryland in 2019. Breakers open the season on August 26 at home against Dana Hills for the 22nd meeting between the two schools. The series is tied 10-10-1.
Water polo for boys, cross-country skiing, golf for girls, beach volleyball for boys – The competition begins after Labor Day weekend.
