CINCINNATI (AP) — Mark Kolozsvary scored a goal in the 10th inning from Matt Wisler late in the game and led the Cincinnati Reds to a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night.
Kolozsvary opened the 10th place finish as a runner-up to Mike Moustakas. He followed up against Wisler (2-3) after a sacrificial bruise from Nick Senzel. Albert Almora Jr. went in front of Wisler’s beam with pinch hitter Tyler Naquin at the plate.
Tampa Bay had a chance to score in the top half of the inning, but Kyle Farmer beat Francisco Mejia at Yandy Diaz’s grounder’s plate to a shortstop against Josh Kuhnel (1-1). The piece was confirmed by a video review.
Farmer then snatched the liner from Wander Franco and finished second for a double play late in the inning.
It was the first major game finish since Dylan Floro for the Dodgers in a 4-5 loss in Seattle on Aug. 18, 2018. It was the first such loss for the Rays in franchise history.
Brandon Drury scored a home game to help last-placed Cincinnati win back-to-back games for the first time since June 26 in San Francisco and June 28 against the Cubs in Chicago. Senzel had two of the Reds’ four goals.
Cincinnati has notched its first three walk-off wins of the season in the past six days.
Tampa Bay had won back-to-back and five-of-six after a four-game losing streak.
Ray’s left-hander Shane McClanahan hit eight while working six innings of a one-run ball. He retired his last 10 batters.
Tampa Bay jumped forward in the third RBI singles from Ji-Man Choi, but that was it for the Rays against Luis Castillo and three assists.
Castillo hit eight in seven innings. The right-hander, one of the majors’ key trade targets ahead of the Aug. 2 deadline, is 1-0 in his last three starts and a sparkling 0.90 ERA.
Castillo retired 13 of his last 14 batters.
Drury ended the game in the third with his team-high 18th homer, a booming shot to the left that ricocheted off the upper deck facade.
