Without Iron Man in the MCU, there’s a hole in many of our hearts from the days when we could count on seeing the charismatic Robert Downey Jr. on screen every few years in the franchise. Since Avengers: Endgamethe actor has taken a break from blockbusters except for the 2020s dolittle. However, there have been rumors for years that he could return to the Sherlock Holmes movies with a third installment. Could it still happen? We have the latest.
This was announced in 2019 rocket Man director Dexter Fletcher would take the helm Sherlock Holmes3, with a December 2021 release date at this time. That never happened, but Fletcher recently shared what’s going on with the project. In his words:
The pandemic derailed it. I do think it will be done. I think it has to be done. Unfortunately, I don’t know what the timetable for this is, but I believe it should be. It’s awesome. I think it’s about the right people being in the right place at the right time. I think that’s it. It’s one of those horrible strokes of fate where the pandemic struck, scattering people around the world to the four winds. But I know the appetite for it is huge, and I’m sure there are other people who are aware of it too. But I think it should be because it’s brilliant. I really hope so.
When speaking to collidersthe filmmaker long associated with it Sherlock Holmes Threequel shared optimism that the film will be made. He shared that Sherlock Holmes3 was “derailed” by the pandemic and has been “scattering people” ever since. Fletcher announced this at the end of 2020 Project was put on the back burner until it was clear “where the world is,” but perhaps now that the world is returning to many elements of its pre-pandemic self, the project will finally bear fruit.
Robert Downey Jr. recently filmed Oppenheimer with Christopher Nolan, while his Watson, Jude Law, is said to play Henry VIII in the film fire blight. Perhaps the two can reprise their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Reroll John Watson as planned as they become more available.
The actors played the classic detective couple from 2009 Sherlock Holmes and 2011s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which collectively grossed over $1 billion at the box office. Both films were directed by Guy Ritchie and the filmmaker originally wanted to return to his franchise, but resigned in 2019 to allow Fletcher to pick up where the franchise left off.
Jude Law previously teased that the film would “play up the fact that they haven’t seen each other for a long time either” when talking about Holmes and Watson. Sounds like Sherlock Holmes3 also had a script before COVID-19 changed plans narcotics Creator Chris Brancato behind the script.
At the same time, earlier this year, it was reported that Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan Downey are executive producers two Sherlock Holmes spin-offs be introduced for HBO Max from character set Sherlock Holmes3. While the Warner Bros. sequel hasn’t officially gotten the green light (again) yet, we can conclude that there’s a good chance Downey will return as Sherlock one day upcoming movies.
