Industries with the Most Workplace Injuries in California | national news

When the Occupational Safety and Health Administration opened in 1971, the state of workplace safety was extremely grim. In the 1960s, a staggering 14,000 workers died on the job every year. With no safety or enforcement rules in place, workers were left largely unprotected from unsafe conditions, leading to high rates of injury and death.

The creation of OSHA dramatically changed the workplace safety landscape. During the first three decades after the opening of the administration, the rate of industrial accidents fell by 40%. In 2020, 4,764 work-related deaths occurred in the United States, compared to 5,333 in 2019, although occupational illnesses quadrupled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While workplaces have generally become safer over the past five decades, with far fewer reported injuries and fatalities, some industries are more dangerous than others. In 2020, the industries with the highest rates of workplace fatalities were agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, construction, and transportation and warehousing. Due to the pandemic, however, nurses and other healthcare workers have experienced much higher than usual rates of illness and injury, leading to days off.

Stacker compiled a list of industries with the highest rate of workplace injuries in California in 2021 using OSHA data. Industries are ranked by accident rate. Ties are broken by the number of accidents. work year, or 2,000 hours, and industries with an injury rate of 0 were excluded.
