Davey Allison is one of the biggest names in NASCAR history, and there’s a reason he’s also named one of the NASCAR’s Top 75 Drivers. Being one of the legendary runners, his death left a void in the hearts of his loved ones including the fans. Davey Allison lost his life on July 13, 1993 in a helicopter crash, while reportedly driving to Talladega Superspeedway to watch Neil Bonnett (his friend) and David Bonnet (Neil’s son) test drive a car for the show David Bush.
McReynolds began working with Allison in 1991 as crew chief for Robert Yates Racing. Allison and McReynolds won 3 pole positions and 11 races between 1991 and 1993, making McReynolds an elite team leader. Even though the McReynolds only worked with Allison for 3 years, their friendship grew as deep as friends of a year. In remembrance of him, Davey Allison’s best friend Larry McReynolds took to Twitter and shared a heartwarming message.
On his Twitter post, McReynolds wrote, “30 years ago today, July 13, 1993, not only did I lose the pilot I was so successful with, but I absolutely lost my best friend, Davey Allison! A fan shared his memory of July 13 and said: “I still remember that day. I was a truck driver on 65 S in Louisville, KY, out of Fairgrounds when it happened on the radio news. I was shocked. I had to find a place to stop and see if it was true. It’s been a sad year in racing.”

A fan who felt like this helicopter crash was yesterday’s news said with emotion: “I’ve been thinking about it a lot since yesterday, Larry. It’s been three decades, but for us, the fans, his family and friends, it still feels like yesterday. It really feels like it was yesterday.
Then there was a fan who revealed he was supposed to be there with Allison when the legend was hospitalized after the helicopter crash. Recalling that day with Allison, he said: “I remember sitting with you and others that Monday night in the hospital. We talked for a while. You grew up in Ensley, Alabama. I had family there, so we We talked about it a bit. You are an amazing man and a wonderful human being. Rolling tide”
“He left a big void. Even though I wasn’t a Ford fan, I’ve always been an Allison fan. I loved the white, black, gold and red car. Looks great on the track. I too often think of him. He was a race runner,” said another.
