INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA’s Division I Transformation Committee will recommend changes to the transfer rules and violation procedure before the end of June. The committee wants to establish designated time periods during which collegiate athletes can declare their intention to transfer and be admitted to a new school immediately. Transfer windows would be set from sport to sport. The intention behind the change is to provide structure and clarity for athletes and coaches. Updates to the violations process would be made in hopes of making investigations more timely and holding violators accountable.
CLEMSON, SC (AP) — Clemson has hired Michigan coach Erik Bakich to help revive a Tigers baseball program that has missed the NCAA tournament for the past two seasons. The school announced this on Thursday. Bakich’s hiring was approved by the school’s Board of Trustees. Bakich was given a six-year contract that starts him at $850,000 for the next season and increases by $50,000 each year through 2027-28. Bakich has led the Wolverines to five NCAA tournament appearances since 2015. Michigan was the 2019 national runner-up. Bakich takes over for Monte Lee, who was fired after seven seasons.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — When the College World Series is like the first two rounds of the NCAA baseball tournament, fans at the outdoor courts at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska will be taking home plenty of souvenir balls. The 424 homers hit in Regionals and Super Regionals is a tournament record and at least 14 games remain to be played in the CWS. The eight-team event begins Friday with No. 5 Texas A&M against Oklahoma and No. 9 Texas against Notre Dame. Saturday’s opener game #2 Stanford vs. Arkansas and Mississippi vs. #14 Auburn.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Bracket 1 in the College World Series might as well be called the Rivals Bracket. Texas is grouped with its two biggest opponents in Oklahoma and Texas A&M and will play one or the other depending on the outcome of its game against Notre Dame on Friday. A subplot is that Texas and Oklahoma will join the Aggies in the Southeastern Conference in the not too distant future. Stanford needed to win five elimination games in the tournament to reach Omaha for the second straight season. Brock Jones said experience could serve the cardinal well.
