While HBO is reportedly considering a number of series set in the Game of Thrones universe, including one that’s definitely coming to fruition this year, House of the Dragon, most of them are prequels of some sort, based on parts by George RR are based on Martin’s work.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that a new Game of Thrones show is in the works, a Jon Snow-based spin-off set after the events of the main series and will see actor Kit Harrington return in the role.
Such a show would progress beyond the source material, the 7 book series that George RR Martin hasn’t even come close to finishing (Winds of Winter every day, right?), and the idea of going back to that timeline and unleashing new ones Stories raise the specter of how badly the series went as Martin’s material dried up and it was up to showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss to find a way forward.
That culminated in the show’s absolutely crippling Season 8, which featured expensive, epic battles but plot twists almost everyone disliked, including a bizarre finale that killed a now-evil Daeneyrs and made Bran Stark king.
Jon Snow returned north to live among the wildlings after the Wall fell and the White Walkers were defeated, though technically he had a claim to the Iron Throne. A throne that no longer exists because a dragon burned it into a puddle.
The idea of a Jon Snow series naturally raises the question of what other characters might return alongside him. While the show killed many big players during or just before the finale, Jaime, Cersei, Littlefinger, Jorah, Theon, The Hound and Daenerys, there were many that featured again, Sansa, Arya, Tyrion, Sam, Tormund, Bran , Brienne, Davos, Gendry and many more.
One of the immediate questions I heard was why Jon Snow would get a spin-off because Arya, who we last saw, sailed away on an adventure far from Westeros, but who knows how that decision was made. I get the impression that actress Maise Williams, now 25, is very keen to move away from the young Arya Stark image, and perhaps she didn’t want to return.
Again, there are a number of other Game of Thrones spin-offs that are or have been under consideration, although many of them may not make it to the air and some have already been scrapped. So far we’ve heard of Tales of Dunk and Egg, 10,000 Ships, 9 Voyages, Flea Bottom, and an animated series, but this would be the direct continuation of the main Game of Thrones storyline, starring one of the three main characters of the throughout the series (I would consider Tyrion and Daenerys to be the other two).
It’s almost certain that former showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss wouldn’t be doing this Jon Snow show as they were busy with other projects, but still, it’s hard to erase how much damage their season 8 and finale did Game of Thrones, and trying to pick up the pieces from it in a coherent way and start writing non-Martin material feels like an extremely tall order.
