Good luck, Leo Grande is a sex-positive comedy like no other before.

The film follows widowed retired teacher Nancy, played by Emma Thompson, who experiences a sexual awakening with the help of a handsome sex worker, played by Daryl McCormack.

Written by the hilarious Katy Brand (Katy Brand’s Big Ass Show) and directed by Sophie Hyde, it was a hit at the Sundance Festival and provided a refreshing portrayal of sex work and sexual exploration as a senior.

Reflecting on her role at the film festival, Thompson said, “What struck me next was the real need for this film. The way we talk about joy or shame, I didn’t realize how thirsty I was for a story like this until it came up.”

Good Luck To You Leo Grande hits UK cinemas on June 17th.

The film is rated 15 due to the strong sexual references throughout.

The comedy follows Thompson as Nancy, a widow and retired schoolteacher who realizes she has lived her entire life without an orgasm.

With her husband gone now, she decides to have some fun and enlists the help of attractive sex worker Leo Grande, played by Daryl McCormack.

But Nancy wasn’t expecting a conversation either and was soon fascinated by everything the young man had to say. The pair form an unlikely friendship and Nancy embarks on a journey of self-discovery.

Describing the storyline from production company Genesis Pictures, “Good luck, Leo Grande is an uplifting comedy that challenges expectations. Nancy & Leo discover an unexpected connection in this hilarious, heartwarming, sex-positive tale of empowerment and self-discovery.”

A trailer for the film was released on May 16.

The film has a small cast, but it packs all the punches.

The lead role, Nancy, is played by Thompson (Last Christmas, Bridget Jones’s Baby).

In an opinion piece for Vogue, she wrote of her role: “Before I did Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, I had no idea how much I would learn about my attitude towards my own body, pleasure and shame.

“How I would laugh at the genuine stupidity of so many of our responses to sexual pleasure and how I would cry at what is lost in life when it is suppressed, ignored and punished.”

Thompson, whose last major role was in Disney’s Cruella, will play Miss Trunchbull in the upcoming new Matilda movie.

Joining the actress in the role of Leo Grande is Daryl McCormack, best known for playing Isiah Jesus on Peaky Blinders.

The 29-year-old Irish actor, a rising star in both film and television, told Variety about filming intimate scenes.

McCormick said: “I remember one time the three of us were standing in the room stark naked and Emma was like, ‘I have a feeling we’re all being held here by something bigger. It really feels like we’re destined to tell this story in some way.”

You can watch the film online in the US, with it being released on the Hulu streaming platform.

So far, however, no streaming service in the UK has confirmed they will be showing it.
