BROOKLINE, Mass. (AP) — Collin Morikawa showed just-timed signs of getting out of the pedestrian game at the US Open, reaching the low scorer with a 4-under-66 Friday for a share of the 36-hole lead Championship with Joel Dahmen and a chance to win a Major for the third year in a row.
Defending champion Jon Rahm played with Morikawa at the country club, doing his best to keep up with an eagle and a series of big par putts that felt just as valuable. Rahm had a 67 and was a shot behind in a group that also included Rory McIlroy, who won the Canadian Open.
Not to be missed was Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, who smashed in from thick rough just before the par-5 14th green for an Eagle that put the Texan back into the mix with a 67. He was two strokes behind.

Rendon worsened a previous wrist injury during Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers and has not played since. Rendon first injured his wrist in mid-May.
Angels Head Athletic trainer Mike Frostad said Rendon has a subluxation where the wrist tendon comes out of the groove where it’s supposed to sit.
NFL
A person with knowledge of the decision said the NFL fined the Washington Commanders $100,000 and stripped the team of two offseason workouts over the next year for excessive contact between players in practice.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on Friday on condition of anonymity because the league failed to announce the disciplinary move.
The fine, first reported by ESPN, applies to coach Ron Rivera, who was so enraged by a particular hit during organized team activities that he stopped practice to lecture his team. Safety Jeremy Reaves had significant contact with sophomore Dyami Brown during practice without pads on June 8.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) — The chairman of the Nashville Predators has agreed to sell a majority of his stake in the NHL team to former Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam.
The Predators announced the settlement on Friday. No details were given on the purchase price for a franchise recently estimated by Sportico at $680 million.

Longtime Davidson coach Bob McKillop is retiring, ending a run that included coaching NBA star Stephen Curry with the Wildcats and being one of the most successful active coaches in Division I men’s basketball.
McKillop announced his resignation at a campus press conference on Friday, which will take effect at the end of the month. His son, assistant head coach and former Wildcats player Matt McKillop, will take over as coach after serving as an assistant on his father’s staff since 2008.
The announcement of the retirement came shortly after athletic director Chris Clunie said Davidson would make Curry’s No. 30 the first number to be retired from the school after graduating this year – 13 years after leaving the school early for the pros and a day after Curry won his fourth title with Golden State while being named NBA Finals MVP.

MADRID (AP) – Rafael Nadal will try to play at Wimbledon after spending “a week without a limp” thanks to new treatment on his painful left foot, the 22-time Grand Slam champion said on Friday.
“My intention is to play Wimbledon,” said Nadal on his home island of Mallorca. “If things don’t go the way I’d like, then we’ll see what happens. (But I’m happy. I’ve been walking without a limp for a week.”

DETROIT (AP) — The Michigan Supreme Court on Friday rejected a final appeal by sports doctor Larry Nassar, who was sentenced to decades in prison for sexually assaulting gymnasts, including Olympic champions.
Lawyers for Nassar said he was wronged in 2018 and deserved a new hearing based on vindictive remarks by a judge who called him a “monster” who would “wither” in prison like the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz “.
“I just signed your death warrant,” Ingham County Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said of Nassar’s 40-year sentence.
The state Supreme Court said Nassar’s appeal was a “close issue” and that it had “concerns” about the judge’s conduct. But the court also found that despite her provocative statements, Aquilina stuck to the penalty agreement drawn up by attorneys in the case.
