Super2 Series leader Declan Fraser has ensured he will start both races at the season-ending Valo Adelaide 500 from pole position.
The Triple Eight Race Engineering driver set his #777 VF Commodore to a 1:20.3761s earlier in the day in qualifying for Race 1, but improved that by seven tenths of a second when he went 1:19.6381 in qualifying for Race 2 .
In doing so, he edged out Tickford Racing’s Zak Best by 0.1269s on pole in the second race of lap six at the Adelaide Parklands Circuit, while privateer Matt Chahda (#18 Matt Chahda Motorsport FGX Falcon) was delayed third on the grid became 1:19.8102s.
Of the three mathematical title contenders other than Fraser and Best, Cameron Hill (#111 Triple Eight VF Commodore) was fourth, Matt Payne (#10 Grove Racing Nissan Altima) sixth and Tyler Everingham (#27 MW Motorsport Nissan Altima) seventh.
Early in the Super2 half of the session, Hill set a 1’20.4575s and Fraser a 1’20.8906s, the latter with a slight rear-end moment at Turn 14.
Aaron Seton (#30 Matt Stone Racing VF Commodore) then jumped to the top with a 1’20.3929s as most rolled back into the pits after just a single flyer in their early heats.
Fraser came back to beat the first-ever ’19’ in Super2 on the now mostly resurfaced roads of Adelaide before Hill provisionally returned to the front row with a 1:20.1197s.
However, #111 was grabbed by the #78 FGX Falcon of Best with a 1:19.7650 before Thomas Maxwell (#3 MWM Nissan Altima) moved up to third with a 1:20.1005.
Hill reclaimed third place with a 1:19.9854 just before the checkered flag, only to be pushed to the other side of the front row as Chahda pulled out a 1:19.8102.
Maxwell was fifth and Payne sixth with 1:20.2074s, Everingham with 1:20.3391s and Seton with that early 1:20.3929s.
Jaylyn Robotham (#999 Image Racing VF Commodore) looked set to give pole position a boost until he slammed on the brakes at Turn 14 to eventually finish ninth on the grid with a 1m20.4267s, one place ahead of debutant Lochie Dalton (#8 Brad Jones Racing VF Commodore).
In the previous Super3 half of the session, series leader Kai Allen (#26 Eggleston Motorsport VE Commodore) claimed another class pole with a 1:21.1221.
He will start 15th on the grid while title rival Brad Vaughan (Anderson Motorsport) finished second in class and 18th thanks to a 1:22.5460 on his only flying lap before driving the #5 FG Falcon left turn 11 damaged with a scratch on the wall.
Race 1 gets underway tomorrow at 1:55 p.m. local time/2:25 p.m. AEDT, while the second 19-lap round of the weekend gets underway at 1:25 p.m. local time/1:55 p.m. AEDT on Sunday.
