His journey began in a big way with shows like Hip Hip Hooray and he still loves it as a medium. But Rushad Rana has also recently been experimenting with the medium OTT. While he’ll be starring in the much-talked about web show Aashram with Bobby Deol, he’s also part of the Amazon Prime anthology film Modern Love Mumbai. With the constant comparison between OTT and movies, the Anupamaa actor talks about what is the difference between him and what made him take the role in Aashram 3 with Esha Gupta.
EXCLUSIVE: From Anupamaa to Aashram 3, Rushad Rana on TV & OTT – “Your character should be well-written regardless of the medium”
Viewers would remember him as Anirudh from Anupamaa. In The Star Show, he played the role of Kavya, aka Madalsa Sharma’s on-screen ex-husband. And in Aashram 3 he is seen as a great devotee of Baba Nirala. Speaking of his character on the web show, Rushad said, “I play a character in Aashram 3 named Vipul Dahiya who is a big builder. He and his wife are great worshipers of Baba. And my character is so biased towards the Baba that I won’t be able to figure out that the Baba actually did wrong things for a very long time.”
Adding to his bagging of the role, Rushad explained, “I received a call from the casting team to audition for this role and I happened to be in Darjeeling for another shoot and as it was my first day of shooting I ignored it the audition first. But they were very keen on my audition, so I finished my day’s work and sent them the audition video. The casting team responded positively after just a few days.”
While Rushad has starred in many popular shows since the ’90s, even as a teenage acting star, the internet is a new form of content that has gained momentum, especially post-lockdown. Speaking about the difference between television and the internet, he added, “I think the internet gives you a little more freedom to act as an actor because there’s a lot of experimentation with new scripts these days, but I also think it’s important to improve your character regardless of the medium is well written to help you perform well.
Not only Aashram 3 but Rushad also features in Modern Love Mumbai anthology streaming on Amazon Prime. Rushad expressed his delight at the projects he’s bagged, adding, “I’m really happy with the way web projects are coming my way, the parts I got had great visibility and even now, my parts in Aashram 3 and Modern Love Mumbai I got a huge response from my friends, my family and my fans.”
