Who are the Thunderbolts?

In the comics, the Thunderbolts are a group of reformed villains. The original team was formed by Baron Zemo after the Avengers were killed, but unknown to the rest of the world, the new Thunderbolts team were actually Zemo’s masters of evil in disguise. However, over time, the Thunderbolts actually begin to enjoy being seen as heroes and doing good, eventually overthrowing Zemo as their leader. In the comics, as with all comic book superteams, the Thunderbolts’ lineup and leadership has changed significantly over the years, with various members leaving and joining the team. However, one thing has always remained the same: the Thunderbolts are far more morally gray than the Avengers.

As mentioned above, the Comic Thunderbolts team has seen a revolving door of members over the years. However, there are already (or used to be) some characters in the MCU that have been linked to the team in the comics. Each of them has the potential to appear in Marvel’s thunderbolts Movie. This includes a number of characters who have led the Thunderbolts including Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl), Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Wilson Fisk/ Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofri0), even Norman Osborn/Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe). The only leader from the comics who probably wouldn’t appear is Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross/Red Hulk, since his actor William Hurt passed away. Other potential candidates include Contessa Val (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who could very well play the role of thunderbolts Leader, Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), John Walker/US Agent (Wyatt Russell), Emil Blonsky/Abomination (Tim Roth), Jack Duquesne/Swordsman (Tony Dalton), Trish Walker/Hellcat (Rachael Taylor) and Ava/Ghost ( Hannah John Kamen).

For now, plot details for thunderbolts are being kept under wraps and it’s not clear yet if there’s even a script. However, there are many ways for the MCU to do this. With Zemo’s end in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Clearly fielding more of him in the future, it’s entirely possible that the MCU will adapt a version of the team’s origin story from the comics, in which Zemo recruits a team of villains disguised as heroes. With Contessa Val now in the mix, and Zemo seemingly playing both sides, it’s more likely that Marvel will forego the villain origins and make them straight into a team of anti-heroes and other heroes fallen from grace. It’s unclear what might lie ahead for them, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the story thunderbolts Film set up in a Disney+ show or two.
