EastEnders star Adam Woodyatt has confessed he has decided to give up alcohol because doctors have warned him his liver is getting “a bit pounded”.
The 53-year-old actor played fan-favorite Ian Beale on the BBC One soap opera for 36 years before leaving the show last year – and it’s unclear if he will ever return.
He went on to appear in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! where he finished sixth, leaving Gwrych Castle alongside Olympic gold medalist Matty Lee.
Celebrities usually lose weight on the popular ITV show, but Adam’s journey began long before he was even approached by producers to set foot on the Welsh castle.

Speaking on The Nightcap podcast, Adam said: “It was a health thing (about why he gave up alcohol). I went to the hospital with a stomach problem and they pointed out that my liver was probably pounded a bit.
“They said, ‘Look, let your liver rest for six weeks, we’ll run some tests.’ Then Covid happened and six weeks became 12 weeks.
“And I was like, ‘You know what — I cracked this, I don’t miss it, I’m better off without it,’ and I was like, ‘This is it!’
“I’m not going to say never again, but no alcohol right now and it’s fine.
“But I still like to smell it, especially rum. I’m not that good with whiskey.”
Adam has lost three stone since quitting alcohol during the coronavirus lockdown.
The actor is an avid cyclist and he admitted losing weight means he can enjoy his hobby longer and now drinks nothing stronger than coffee after embracing the new lifestyle.
Speaking to the Mirror last month, he said: “Basically I’ve given up alcohol. That was the biggest change I made.

“By giving up alcohol, the weight goes down, and because the weight went down, it was easier to ride a bike. So it was easier to stay fit.
“That was all. I just don’t really focus on it. I didn’t really make a fuss about it. I just stopped drinking.”
He added: “At this point in my life, yeah, I’m pretty lucky not to drink. And the result is that I lost about three stone in weight.
“I’ve always loved cycling, but as anyone who rides a bike knows, it’s a lot easier when you’re lighter. People spend hundreds of pounds to shave 10 grams off gear like lighter pedals.
“Just go and lose some weight and your body will be 10 pounds lighter.”
