Early life
Shirley Neilsen Blum (née Neilsen) and Irving Blum were Los Angeles-born Blum’s parents. His father was an independent art dealer and director of the Ferus Gallery, while his mother was an art professor. Blum has Jewish ancestors.
Vassar College, where he received his BA in 1991. While at Vassar, Blum shared a dormitory with future filmmaker Noah Baumbach, with whom he made his debut film as producer, Kicking and Screaming, in 1995.
Career
Blum was an executive at Miramax and later an independent producer at Paramount under Bob and Harvey Weinstein. Blum previously worked as a producer at the Malaparte Theater Company, founded by actor Ethan Hawke. He attended Vassar College and graduated in 1991. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Academy Museum of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
A letter of recommendation from one of his relatives, comedian Steve Martin, helped secure funding for his first film as producer, Kicking and Screaming (1995).
