The latest Pixar film light year premiered on June 17 to great anticipation from fans.
After slightly stumbling upon the news that the film would be banned in several countries due to its inclusion of a same-sex human, light year already open on Wednesday for previews in some cinemas. With the expectation that the film would gross around $135 million by its opening weekend, we have an updated look at how well the film is doing so far.
light year has already earned about $5.2 million in movie previews, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This is earnings made before the film’s official premiere, in this case on June 17th.
The hope is that more money will be made this weekend and that families will choose to go to the theater on Sunday and celebrate Father’s Day with Buzz Lightyear – but the film has so far fallen short of expectations. The Hollywood Reporter said the film was originally expected to gross domestic sales of $75 million to $80 million this weekend, although that is now the case following its Friday premiere it trended closer to $52 million to $55 million over the holiday weekend.
That’s what the Hollywood Reporter says this is below Jurassic World: Dominion, which premiered last weekend and is expected to gross $57 million this weekend at the box office.
