When the Houston Texans visited the Denver Broncos, fans witnessed another game full of mistakes. Luckily, the Broncos found a way to win this week.
This win is big for Denver as the team continues to work through the issues. Who shone the most in the first win of head coach Nathaniel Hackett’s era?
Here are Mile High Huddle‘s Week 2 Broncos Game Balls.
Courtland Sutton | WR
Sutton was the only wide receiver for the Broncos today. He made it big and was the reason the team walked away with a win.
It was an incredible feat, hauling in seven receptions for 122 yards when the entire defense knew he was getting the ball. Sutton was an inch away from adding a touchdown to his stat line. He was by far the player of the game.
Javonte Williams | RB
When Coach Hackett called for no somber plays and decided to let the ball run, Williams delivered. Williams was his usual tackle-breaking self, chewing yardage.
Had the Broncos called his name more often, he would have had a great day, averaging well over five yards per carry by the end of the game when the defense knew a run was coming. Williams ended the day with 15 carries for 75 yards and added a catch for 10 yards. Hopefully his performance is enough for Hackett to stop being cute and call for more typical running plays with Williams.

Damarri Mathis | cb
When the Broncos defense lost Patrick Surtain II for the game to a shoulder injury, hope hung by a thread. Mathis came in and played very well, especially for a rookie. There’s no substitute for Surtain in coverage, but Mathis provided solid coverage and was a great offensive tackler.
Mathis’ open field tackle on Texans running back Dameon Pierce in the fourth quarter was a significant play in a Broncos win. Mathis finished the game with five tackles, all solo, and didn’t allow much for yards after the catch.
Dre’Mont Jones | DL
Jones was quiet for most of the day, but he came out big for defense in the second half, counting two sacks, one of which was the Broncos had to have to end the game. He also added one tackle for a loss and six tackles total as the Broncos defense held the Texans for 234 total yards.
Jones made it big when he was needed most, which is what players need to do to be considered stars.
The Broncs had to get that win, and despite all the mistakes, these players gave them a shot at the win. The Broncos need to clean up their mental blunders and the coach needs to get the right head in order for the team to keep winning.
