News update from Wednesday
WWE
- WWE has announced that Javier Bernal will be in action at NXT next Tuesday. Bernal said there’s no better way to make a difference than taking down Cameron Grimes.
- A video aired last night revealing that Quincy Elliott is coming to NXT soon. Elliott, who debuted for WWE on NXT Level Up this March, uses the nickname “The Super Diva.”
- During an Instagram Live to promote former WWE Executive Writer Brian Gewirtz’s new book, Becky Lynch spoke about the creative freedom she has on the mic at WWE:
- Luckily for me it’s not like that [having to memorize promos word-by-word] and it’s not for this guy [Seth Rollins] either. We get a promo and sometimes there are lines in it that you have to hit. They’ll often be lines like this where you’re like, “That doesn’t sound like she’s going to say that.” But for the most part, we’re at the point where we’ve gotten enough equity and we have enough faith in it that we can write our own promos.
- It’s usually a collaborative process where I feel comfortable with my writer, [I’ll go] “Well, what do you think of that? I feel like it needs to score more and I think we could do more with that. And often they will come up with a good line. It’s cooperative in that way once you’ve gotten that equity, but I think when you first show up [it’s different]. When I first showed up I was too afraid to say something inappropriate. I thought, ‘Oh, those are the words on the page, I have to say every single word exactly as it is.’ Luckily that’s not the case anymore.
- Lynch also said she hopes to finish her own book in the next few months.
- Lynch gave an update on her recovery from a severed shoulder: “I feel like it has given me a lot more mobility because when it happened it was so painful I was like oh no I’m going to be out for a long time , long time but now it’s healing very fast, i feel strong, i feel good so i hope it won’t be much longer.
- During an interview with SHAK Wrestling, Eric Bischoff shared his excitement about WWE’s new creative direction with the Triple H executive:
- I’m extremely enthusiastic and at the same time somewhat prescient because while I was hoping these things would happen, they did, right? Noticeable in a relatively short period of time… But Paul has already made it clear publicly that he will give the talent a little more freedom and stick less rigidly to the script, word for word, comma for comma comma approach that has been used in the last 10, 15 years was pretty much the norm. That in itself is kind of exciting because you’re going to have talents that are going to fail. They’ll stumble, they’ll stumble over a word…
- Guess what? That feels dirty. That feels a little more real. This is live TV. I’m looking at some of the episodic elements in the latest formats, where a story starts early in the show and then continues throughout. It’s kind of a three-act structure that I’ve been asking for for the last seven years. We see a three-act structure within a three-hour show. Imagine. Episodic storytelling. It’s that kind of discipline to the detail of the story and format – because you can’t have a good story if you don’t have a good format and vice versa – that kind of commitment to discipline and format and structure that I think creating much better television, and this is already happening.
- Kevin Owens believes that winning the WWE Tag Team Championships with Sami Zayn would be the ultimate good moment for both of them: “Of course. I’ve never been a tag team champion. I would like to be tag team champion. Well, maybe not everyone. There are a few guys that I could see myself winning the tag team titles with, of course Sami is at the top of the list. That would be the ultimate good moment for us to achieve that. We’ve been tag team champions everywhere except WWE. We absolutely have to take that off the list soon enough.”
- Alexa Bliss, Raquel Rodriguez and Aliyah appeared on WWE’s The Bump this afternoon.
- Drew McIntyre will be a guest on The Bump next Wednesday.
- The WWE YouTube channel uploaded The Rock vs. Ric Flair from the July 29, 2002 episode of Raw, Edge’s 2011 retirement announcement, and a six-woman tag match from the August 17, 2016 episode of NXT.
Other wrestling
- Diamond Dallas Page isn’t interested in having one last match: “It’s not something I’ll ever do. Conrad said, ‘You know, DDP, you’d be perfect to do one of these,’ I said, ‘Nah , brother, I’m fine. I had my last match, it never gets better than that. “I’ve been lucky to have all my guys around and it’s been fun. I’m good with that.”
- Tony Khan told Busted Open Radio that he had big plans for Kris Statlander before her knee injury and still has big plans for her: “Obviously Toni Storm was up there, one of the top two contenders for sure with Kris Statlander and Kris Statlander , really unfortunate injury. We are sorry to see you. I really had and still have big plans for Kris Statlander and terrible timing for the injury of one of our big stars, but we’ve had a lot of injuries this summer and over and over again, the wrestlers at AEW have stepped up to support the company help when there were injuries and I think that was the real theme of this summer.”
- Chris Jericho tweeted about Ricky Steamboat as guest timekeeper for tonight’s Dynamite: “Stay the fuck out of my business, Steamboat…”
- Hangman Page attended a panel at GalaxyCon Raleigh.
- Jack Evans told PWMania how his AEW stint has motivated him: “Honestly one of the things that has been motivating for me lately has been my AEW stint. I didn’t do as well as I could have done there, but still I was grateful for the experience. I don’t know how likely it is that I’ll be there again, although I would love to. It’s a very coveted promotion that everyone is trying to achieve.”
