One of the NFL’s most iconic uniforms will receive a second subtle tweak this season thanks to the league’s revised helmet rule and a clever mix-and-match approach by the Cowboys gear staff.
The team will wear their all-white uniform set for the Week 17 showdown with the Tennessee Titans, the club officially announced Friday. This game is a Thursday night soccer Matchup, so the monochromatic Color Rush shirt/shorts combo is something seen before.

But in 2022 it will be rounded out with a never-before-worn alternative helmet, the Cowboys have confirmed.
They showed off the new lid in a video they posted on social media.

But wait, you might say. The Cowboys have already unveiled the all-white throwback helmet they will be wearing for their Thanksgiving Day game against the Giants. So how’s this new?
It’s all in the details.
The alternative Arctic Cowboys helmet features the team’s current star logo, outlined with a thin blue and white border since the 1964 season. Before that, the star was rimless; this is the logo that will adorn the Thanksgiving flashbacks.
Also debuting for the December 29 game is a matching white face mask, marking the first time the Cowboys have worn a cage of a color other than gray.
The team’s announcement doesn’t actually come as a complete surprise considering the alternate helmet was leaked in late July. As teams across the league unveiled either recaps or alternate looks for the season, the Cowboys emerged both lists.

Some assumed it was just an artist’s mistake that Dallas was included in both announcements, but a close look at the artwork reveals the precise differences detailed above. (The throwback version even removes the “Cowboys” wordmark decal on the front bumper, although it will grace the alternate helmet. It’s a nice nod to historical accuracy, as these were obviously not part of the 1960’s headgear.)
The NFL’s relaxation of the one-shell rule this season allowed many teams to invent an entirely new colorway combo, while allowing some others to revive a look from the past.
By mixing their retro shell colorway with their current logo and adding a brand new face mask, the Cowboys were able to sneak two new looks into the 22’s schedule.
The Week 17 clash with the Titans could prove to be an important game for both clubs as they prepare to wrap up their regular season. But we already know for sure that the Cowboys will be looking sharp for their New Year’s visit to Nashville.
