Conor McGregor has given fans an injury update and confirmed his comeback weight after calling Nate Diaz his toughest test.
“Notorious” has been sidelined since breaking his tibia and fibula at UFC 264 in July 2021 and is expected to make his much-anticipated comeback sometime in 2023.
Recently, talk of McGregor’s participation in MMA has died down as he filmed his film debut alongside Hollywood superstar Jake Gyllenhaal in the Dominican Republic.
However, on Tuesday night McGregor answered some questions about his return, which he predicts will be “the greatest comeback in sports history”.
A member of the UFC superstar’s management team recently revealed that the former doubleweight champion’s leg isn’t fully healed yet, but after a few weeks, the man himself insists it’s stronger than ever.
“Distant memory. Masterful surgeons and team. The leg is now a deadly weapon,” McGregor replied on Twitter when asked how his recovery was progressing.
During his time away from the Octagon, the 34-year-old has been building serious size and previously claimed he will be in contention for the welterweight title upon his return.
McGregor then reiterated his interest in competing at 170 pounds when asked if his next welterweight fight will be. He replied: “Definitely,” adding: “I look forward to hosting clinics. You saw half a page of my dossier.”
The Twitter Q&A wasn’t just about his comeback, and “Mystic Mac” even opened up about upcoming fights, calling Nate Diaz the toughest opponent he’s ever faced.
This isn’t surprising considering Diaz absorbed all of McGregor’s patented power shots before dispatching him in two rounds when they first fought at UFC 196 in March 2016.
The MMA stars met again later in the year and McGregor had to go through five rounds and survive some difficult moments to avenge his first UFC loss with a majority decision win at UFC 202.
Fans have been calling for a third fight between McGregor and Diaz for years, but it’s currently off the table as the American fan favorite recently left the UFC.
Diaz clinched a fourth-round submission win over Tony Ferguson at UFC 279 before announcing his intention to leave the MMA promotion he had worked with for 15 years to pursue lucrative opportunities in boxing.
The 37-year-old is being lined up as a potential opponent for YouTube boxer Jake Paul but has also been called up by four-weight world champion Adrien Broner.
