What is the age rating for blonde?
Marilyn Monroe Biopic Blonde is reviewed NC-17 in the US, suggesting “adult” content in the film.
However, director Andrew Dominik told ScreenDaily that this is the US ratings board, which is “political”.
He said: “When I watch an episode of [HBO show] euphoriait’s far clearer than anything that goes on in it Blond.”
While he denied that the film contained a bloody menstrual oral sex scene, he confirmed that the film adapts a rape scene from the book.
“It’s a challenging film – it is what it is, it says what it says,” he remarked. “And if the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the damn audience’s problem. It is not running for public office.”
What is the Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde about?
Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by author Joyce Carol Oates, Blonde examines the life of the legendary Marilyn Monroe from her perspective.
The film has been in the works for years, with director Andrew Dominik beginning development on the film in 2010.
In a statement shared with Netflix Queue, star Ana de Armas – who was cast in the film in 2019 – said: “Andrew’s ambitions were very clear from the start – to present a version of Marilyn Monroe’s life through her lens.”
She added, “He wanted the world to know what it actually felt like to be not just Marilyn but also Norma Jeane. I found that the most daringtake over unapologetically and feministly she story that I had ever seen.”
Dominik told the streamer that he wanted to delve into Monroe’s psyche and that the film is meticulously based on real photographs – with the imagery influencing “every scene”.
Despite being rated adults-only, Dominik told the streamer that he made the film with “good intentions” and that it was more concerned with “the human cost of the Hollywood system, the power and dangers of female sexuality.”
The film aims to explore many important moments in Marilyn’s life and is not told in a conventional and chronological linear manner.
