Fans of the bat-wielding martial artist Black Canary can breathe a sigh of relief as TV Line has now officially confirmed that production will continue on the standalone film based on the DC Comics character, safe from the recent strategic merger between HBO Max and Discovery+ already seen the cancellation of several other projects from the highly anticipated bat girl to kevin smiths Strange Adventures and the animated ‘Scoob!: Vacation Home.’
Black Canary made its first film appearance in the 2020s Birds of Prey (and the Fantastic Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) as part of the DC Comics cover team. The film was a hit with audiences and critics alike and did well at the box office. Although HBO Max tried to keep production going Black Canary (working title) under wraps, it was eventually revealed that the streamer had once again teamed up with Warner Bros. and DC Films to make the film Jurnee Smollett‘s character, Dinah Lance. While plot details have yet to be announced, it has been confirmed that Smollett will return to reprise her role and that the film will be a spin-off of the first film. Speaking to Comicbook at the time, Smollett expressed excitement at being given the opportunity to reprise the role, but couldn’t reveal much about what to expect. Here’s what she said;
“I’m just so incredibly excited about a bunch of things that I can’t talk about. I mean I’m excited, that’s all I can say. I’m excited to explore a lot…I feel like we’ve only touched the surface with Black Canary. And she’s one of the best martial artists in the DC Universe. It’s something that’s a real challenge in my mind and I just relish the opportunity to be able to explore deeper and further and broader and bigger.”
Smollett will work with him again for the upcoming film Misha Green (Lovecraft country), who will write the screenplay for the film. Smollett and Green initially worked together on Undergrounda 2016 historical drama and later horror fiction series, Lovecraft country. details for Black Canary played close to the chest, however, Green shared a rare update on the project a few months ago when she posted a photo to her Instagram Stories that included a voluminous folder with the film’s working title on the front cover, indicating progress with the film suggesting script.
With little or nothing to hold onto in terms of the direction the film will take, that’s what DC fans were hoping for bat girl would provide some easter eggs about what to expect, but shockingly, the film was canceled by WBD. On the plus side, knowing that production has been kept alive for the film will bring much relief to fans. birds of prey Manufacturer, Sue Kroll will return to produce Black Canary under their Kroll & Co. Entertainment.
