Black Canary was announced last year, and actress Jurnee Smollett has spoken out about her excitement at exploring the character.
DCEU films have been hit or miss, with most ending up on the miss side of the line too often. Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey was a film that seemed destined to land in this group, but against all odds, the R-rated comic film proved a reasonable hit with critics, audiences, and the box office. Last year it was announced that Jurnee Smollett would be repeating her Black Canary role from the film in a solo outing, and it seems the actress was able to give a rare update on the status of the new movie.
Warner Bros. has been expanding its upcoming DC roster of late, but many of these films have either experienced lengthy delays in their release, have been canceled or, in some cases, been pushed to theatrical releases from HBO Max exclusivities due to the merger of Warner Bros. and Discovery. As far as the films that have been planned for a long time have fallen The Lightning and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Blue Beetle is now in cinemas in 2023, while bat girl will still be an HBO Max movie. The question is where Black Canary will make its debut at the end. Speaking to Comicbook.com, Smollett revealed:
“I’m just so incredibly excited about a bunch of things that I can’t talk about. I mean I’m excited, that’s all I can say. I’m excited to explore a lot…I feel like we’ve only touched the surface with Black Canary. And she’s one of the best martial artists in the DC Universe. It’s something that’s a real challenge in my mind and I just relish the opportunity to be able to explore deeper and further and broader and bigger.”

Black Canary might be accompanied by other raptors
Since the announcement of Black Canary Movie, no details have been confirmed as to who will star in the movie, what the plot will be, or where it will relate birds of prey and other DCEU films. However, one star birds of prey has already made it clear that they are ready to reprise their role for the Black Canary movie if they had the chance. Speak with colliders Last year, Mary Elizabeth Winstead spoke about the possibility of returning to the franchise as the Huntress. She said:
“I love you to! I’m really looking forward to the Black Canary movie. I love Jurnee, I love the work she has done and I can’t wait to see what they make of it. I have no idea what other characters might be involved. I don’t know if Huntress will continue in any way. You know, there are so many different iterations of Huntress, whether it’s in the comics or on TV and film, so I don’t know if my version of her will continue. But I love her and if there was a chance I’d be there, so we’ll see!”
Whether she gets a chance to reprise her role as part of the Misha Green-penned film will only be announced in the coming months, when Warner Bros. may decide to share a little more about Black Canary’s future.
