MILWAUKEE — You can always count on Austin Riley and the weather to be sizzling towards the end of July.
This month didn’t start well for Riley. But this week was a special week for the all-star third baseman, who hit a Braves franchise record with his home run for the fifth straight game on Saturday night at American Family Field. His third-inning success wasn’t enough to stave off a 4-3 loss to the Brewers, but it did extend one of the best periods of his young career.
“He’s just such a good player,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “The way he handles the adversity and the ups and downs and everything just blows my mind.”
Riley’s three-run home run against Brewers starter Adrian Houser was his sixth home run in a 17-bat span stretching back to Tuesday’s fourth inning, making him the first Brave to pull off the feat. He is now one of ten Braves to hit a home run in five straight games.
This list of 10 players is headlined by Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Chipper Jones and Rogers Hornsby. They also include Ronald Acuña Jr., Brian McCann, Ozzie Virgil, Jeff Burroughs, Joe Adock and Eddie Miller.
Dale Long set the MLB record when he hit a home run in eight straight games. Don Mattingly and Ken Griffey Jr. have since equaled that record.
Riley is the only MLB player, along with Nolan Arenado, Christopher Morel and Jorge Soler, to hit a home run in five straight games this season.
More impressively, Riley is responsible for just the 24th time in five games for a player to hit more than six home runs and score more than 17 runs. The last two players to do so were Trevor Story (2022) and Troy Tulowitzki (2010).
“You’re just trying to keep it up day to day and not get too high because this game will humiliate you quickly,” Riley said. “That I have learned.”
It’s been a solid year for Riley, who was named to the All-Star selection for the second straight year earlier this month. But he’s set the bar pretty high, having finished in the top 10 in National League MVP picks for the past two years.
Riley started Monday’s rest day at .261 with 16 homers and .763 OPS. But what really bothered him was the fact that in his first 11 games in July (49 plate appearances) he only hit .196 on one home run and a .528 OPS.
So he decided it was time to stop worrying and analyze things too much.
“I told myself to have fun, relax and try to slow the game down as much as possible,” Riley said. “Hopefully that allows me to keep this thing going.”
Struggling at this time of year certainly wasn’t normal for Riley. He achieved an OPS of 1.082 in July 2021 and an OPS of 1.344 in July 2022. While hitting 10 of 21 with a double, a triple and six homers in his last five games, he increased his OPS from .528 to .971 in July.
And so he created his chance to score a four-figure OPS for the third straight year in July.
“[Riley] “It means a lot to our team when he doesn’t run like that, just by his presence and what he brings,” said Snitker. “He’s pretty fun to watch when he walks like that.” He’ll always give himself a chance. He’s so professional at what he does.”
