May 21, 1935 – June 1, 2022
On June 1, 2022, Athleen Joyce Rice, 87, our beautiful beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, was greeted in heaven by her mother and father; her 4 siblings; her daughter Connie Lee Thompson; grandchildren, Joshua Leslie Hansen and Christopher Leon Thompson; granddaughter, Crystal Dawn Aranda; and great-grandson Dylan Scott Aranda.
Athleen was born at home in Ogden, Utah on May 21, 1935, to Carl and Arvilla Hurst Slater. She was raised and educated in Ogden, graduating from Ogden High School in 1953.
She met Morris Leon Edwards at Walgreens Corner in Ogden just after he returned home from the Korean War. They married on November 6, 1953 and lived in Sunset where they raised their 5 daughters. They later divorced. She married Clyde Rice and they divorced.
She devoted much of those early years to her family and home. During this time she, along with her twin sister Cathleen, began her 37 year career as a waitress and chef in many restaurants in the Ogden area.
She was an avid Utah Jazz fan and was disappointed they didn’t make it past the first round of the playoffs that year. She loved bowling and at a young age was a baton twirler with her twin, carrying the banner during the Pioneer Days parade. She loved spending time with her family and supporting them in all their activities. She loved camping, boating, and spending time at Bear Lake and Powder Ridge.
She is survived by daughters Kari Story, Ogden, Kathie (Brian) Hull, Syracuse, Sherrie Hansen, Ogden, and Vickie (Nate) Webster, Ogden; son-in-law, Chris Thompson, Sparks, NV; 14 grandchildren: Candy (Terrance) Hamblin, JD Aranda, Kevin (Sandy) Webster, Monica Hansen, Alicia (Trey) Cherry, Austin (Brenden Lund) Hull, Justin (Jessica) Hull, Masyn Story and Heather Hull; Grandchildren: Logan Helsing, Taisee Aranda, William Helsing, Edward Helsing, JJ Ashley, Taten Aranda, Indiana Hamblin, Karston Hull, Kalynn Whitehead, Kooper Hull, Kynlee Hull, Kaius Cherry, Nicol Story, Michael Webster, Kennedy Hull, Aerith Webster; and 23 big dogs.
Your family would like to express our love and appreciation to Annette, Stacy and the staff at Applegate Hospice for their special care for Athleen.
A special thank you to Austin and Brenden who went above and beyond to open their homes and hearts and for their love and care for Grandma.
