Highlights from Day 3 of the AIG Women’s Open in Muirfield
Ashleigh Buhai produced a brilliant birdie barrage to go five shots ahead in the final round of the AIG Women’s Open at Muirfield.
Buhai made five birdies in a six-hole stretch en route to a stunning seven-under 64 and added three more birdies on the back nine before a final hole birdie set the clubhouse goal at 14-under.
The 33-year-old has a comfortable lead over 2019 champion Hinako Shibuno and overnight leader In Gee Chun, who both share second place with nine under, while seven-time major champion Inbee Park is tied for fourth shares with the Swede Madelene Sagstrom.
Chun started the day a shot ahead, holding a clutch putt to salvage par on the first, only to lose her direct advantage when Buhai – who was up front in the group – birded the second par-4.
Buhai shagged the fourth to level with Chun, who had a shot on the second, with both players using the par-5 fifth to keep the pair 10-under ahead.

The South African cupped from close range on the sixth and knocked on the seventh after a brilliant approach set up a fourth consecutive birdie, with Buhai potting an impressive par save on the eighth and two putts from distance on the par five on the ninth to reach turn two in front of us.
Buhai started her back nine with a 20-foot birdie on the 10th, giving her a four-stroke advantage when Chun missed from within three feet to complete a three-putt bogey on the ninth.
A series of two-putt pars down the back nine kept Buhai in control of the tournament, with the lead increasing to five when Chun hit a chunky chip off the 15th green and hit her second bogey of the round.
Buhai chipped from the back of the 17th green to register an eighth birdie of the day and shoot six clean, with her only blemish of the day coming when she failed to pace out of the rough on the final par 4.
Chun mixed three birdies with two bogeys to record a 70 in the third round and move to nine under alongside Shibuno, who hit a back-nine 31, to bolster her hopes for a second AIG Women’s Open title
Brooke Henderson, winner of last month’s Evian Championship, is four down and Charley Hull is another stroke behind, while Ireland’s Leona Maguire heads into the final day tied 19th, along with former world No. 1, Lydia Ko, and the English couple Mel Reid and Jodi Ewart Shadoff for two under.
