Adele performed live to a public audience in London for the first time in five years over the weekend. Her return to the stage was a triumphant one, with the Grammy winner sharing why she canceled her Las Vegas stay and interrupted her show several times on Friday to help fans beat the heat, as reported by People. Her weekend performances mark a return to the limelight for the singer, who has largely stayed out of the public eye in recent years. In a new interview with BBC Radio 4 on Sunday, as reported by The Guardian, she credits boyfriend Rich Paul with encouraging her to step back into the limelight.

During the interview, Adele commented that she felt she had to act like “some kind of recluse” to avoid public attention. But while trying to avoid the paparazzi, she missed out on really living life to the fullest. “Sometimes it’s been two years and I haven’t been seen anywhere,” she explained. “I used to just hang out at home. But I also have a whole setup of how I move and nobody ever knows just so I can go out there and be completely carefree.”

Part of her changed attitude can be attributed to her boyfriend Paul, who helped Adele gain perspective on how much she had to sacrifice to maintain a sense of privacy. “He says, ‘If you want to go to this restaurant, you should try the food in this restaurant, and if you want to go to this birthday party, then you should go. You can’t miss these things – what’s the worst that can happen?’”

This isn’t the first time Adele has shared how Paul has offered support as she rejoined the public eye. In a 2021 interview with British Vogue, the “Hello” singer revealed that some of the men she’d previously dated felt insecure about her fame. “I dated before Rich, but they hated it,” she said. “They find it stressful being out with me or being seen, which meant I was guarding everything beyond that. It never developed because we never experienced things together. Although he is not exhausted from it at all. It feels like it’s consistent and considerate enough that I don’t care, who knows.”

Adele was first linked with Paul in July 2021 and they have been going strong ever since. In February, the pair sparked engagement rumors when she was spotted wearing a pear-shaped diamond ring. During a February appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Adele dodged Norton’s question when he asked if she was engaged. “As if I’d ever tell anyone whether it’s me or not,” she said.

She may be ready to stop worrying about being in the public eye, but that doesn’t mean Adele will completely give up her hard-won privacy.
