We’re still pretty far from Squid Game’s return for Season 2, we’ll likely get the reality show version from Netflix first. According to a new interview with THR, showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk says the Netflix crew asked him about his set designs so they could make the non-lethal competition as true to the series as possible. He dismisses Netflix’s irony of making an actual Squid Game Show where people win money, while the original had a clear anti-capitalist message, saying:
“The reason I created the show was to get that message across, but at the same time I also wanted to be successful; I wanted to make money. I think it’s just normal that this business revolves around Squid Game because we live in a capitalist society. A lot has been invested in this show and the reason is to make money from it. In a competitive and capitalist world, I think these deals are natural.”
To be honest, I respect that very much. But that’s not what we’re here for. We’d like some information on Season 2 of Squid Game, and we have a little bit on the timing and what’s next.
Hwang Dong-hyuk says he has a deadline to finish writing Squid Game season 2 by the end of this year or early next year. I’m not sure if this is a self-imposed deadline or something Netflix is asking for due to their renewal deal. Regardless, it’s pursuing the idea that Squid Game season 2 will likely arrive in late 2023 or early 2024, as he previously said. I would tend to be later.
He was also asked about the content of Season 2 itself, and he said he wanted to make sure he wasn’t just “answering” the reactions he’d read about Season 1:
“I’ve seen a lot of reactions from people to the show, but I don’t want to do season two in response to those reactions. The philosophies I put into the first season all carry over into the second season, of course. Instead of trying to live up to viewers’ expectations, I just thought about the last moment Gi-hun turned away from boarding the plane, and I thought about what he’s going to do next. There will of course be a series of events leading up to the end of the season. I can’t share details yet, but you know that by the end of season one, Seong Gi-hun has become a whole new person, so season two will be about what this new Gi-hun will do and how Die Things will unfold with this new breed of character.”
A lot of people were at Gi-hun for dumping his daughter to get revenge on the Squid Game founders by getting on the plane, but this will no doubt make for a more interesting second season. I doubt he’ll be a player, but with all that money, what kind of power can he wield now?
